just playing loud

I work in the Theatre department of a university. Yesterday I had my guitar & my amp in the car, and at 4:30 I was the only person left in the building. So I dragged it out on the stage, plugged in & turned it WAY up. I've had the amp (Flextone II Plus) for about 3 years, but I believe this is the first time I've ever had it above around 4-5 on the master volume. I ended up playing for about an hour and a half.

God it was fun!!

:D:D

Not really anything to comment on, I just felt like sharing 'cause I had such a good time.

A good room is a rare privelidge, not like picking up a stompbox or amp at the store; that enveloping, more stereo-than-stereo room-'verb is something that you really can't put in a box, you put yourself in the room!

I remember when I was a kid and playing a borrowed Alvarez Yairi flat-top in an empty church. Not exactly the same as the acoustically designed room in a theater, but cool sounding in its own right. Even though I was totally acoustic, since I had no other sounds and noises to compete with, that big room and all that expanse of plaster walls, stained-glass, and hardwood gave every chord an incredible sense of vitality and zing and... electricity! I was so psyched, at first I didn't even realise what was going on, it just jolted me and sounded so huge and awsome! -k

I only had a little of the ear-ringing thing going on (fortunately), but the perma-smile was there! :D

I know it was an empty room, but it really felt good to just be playing on stage again -- I kept wishing I had a band with me...

Since I have a Line 6 amp (modeling) I just kept dialing up new settings. I would hear the sound and just start playing whatever came into my head. You know: "Gee, that would be a great tone for 'Black Magic Woman' " then I'd play it. The one that really stood out was "The Star Spangled Banner" (a la Hendrix, of course!) - I kept moving around the stage to "tune" the feedback; what a blast!

Of course I did a bunch of Aerosmith, SRV, The Who, Beatles, Stones, etc. too.

It's nice to have a decent space like that available. I think next time I'll take a direct-out feed to the house system too. I can't even imagine what it'll sound like running through the 400w Crown amps into the pair of Voice of the Theatre speakers (each 9' tall) If you all hear about a building collapsing at a Washington, D.C. university, you'll know I tried it ;) .

I know what you mean. When I was in high school I used to play guitar for my church's folk mass. I used to love getting there early and just playing. There is nothing like the sound of a 12-string in a big church! :D

The room at the school is a little more "live" than I think would be ideal, but it was a lot of fun just filling that space (it seats about 600). And the little bit of slapback I was getting got me playing a bunch of Stray Cats tunes ;)

Oh, man the one thing that I really miss when I'm playing here at home through a modeling preamp and effects into headphones is FEEDBACK!!!

And, of course, the aforementioned sound of natural acoustics enveloping me in a large room! -k

I've had several similar experiences...

When I worked for Opryland U.S.A., I had the opportunity to wail on guitar several times.

Once, I had to set up backline and small PA in a rehearsal hall. It wouldn't be used until the next day. I brought my digitech RP-1, plugged into both guitar amps, and cranked up the guitar and vox into the PA. I hadn't performed in some time, and I lived in apartments for several years, so this was sheer pleasure. My boss happened to be walking just outside the building and peeked in the door to see what was going on. It shocked him because he had no idea I was a musician. :D

Another time I plugged my acoustic guitar into a small system I'd set up on the Grand Ole' Opry stage... now THAT was a rush.. even if the house was empty. :thu:

You guys are making me jealous. My wife raised the roof (figuratively) when I played through my Randall Pro Tube II at 1/3 power (16.67 watts), gain 8, final volume 4 and guitar volume 3. :(

It was awesome while it lasted. I'll just live vicariously (25 cents again) through all 'ya all. :D

Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".
