Dave da Dude Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 James-Italy It really doesn't take any skill or expertise to put the accelerator down and steer the car in a straight line. Real skill comes out on how you handle the curves. I used to think I was a pretty good driver... Now, after taking some courses and spending time on the track I know I've got tons to learn. Rev- if you ever get a chance take a driving course on a race track. It will change your whole perspective about driving. I don't drive like a crazy anymore on the streets. I get all the adrenaline rush I need on the track! Firstly, I used to love fast cars and fast women. Actually I still do, I'm just a little "over the hill" for them and they don't like me. But in the late ' 60's, I had the money (and lack of wisdom) for the fast car (a 1963 [in 1967] Jaguar XKE with 11.0 : 1 Racing Pistons, Competition Clutch and "blueprinted" engine. It had "European" gearing (orginally sold as a new car in France). Would you believe 118 mph at redline in THIRD gear (and 100 mph on the "River Road" w/ one hand on the [real wood] steering wheel). I never wrang out fourth gear though, I had one mis-matched brand/tread (but it was still steel-belted like the other 3 Michelen's). I calculated about 165 mph (or more, 4th was 1 : 1, not OD), allowing for wind resistance, maybe 150 plus. MANY stories of hair-raising slides, etc. Unfortunately I didn't have a track available for my XKE, although later I did (have several) for my 360cc Yamaha Enduro (my wife still can't understand why I HATE rollercoasters, but a 12 x 12 [foot] jump is [or was] a RUSH and dirt bike and white crosses and...) and I can't keep up with the fast women. Now loose women, that's a different story, in my dreams . Now I'm sticking with fast guitars (Highway One; Raven with (someday) mod'd w/ SD Pearly Gates (n), "Distortion" (b) and "Hot" (m) [already "in stock, in house"). And one special "ex-fast" woman, my wife. Dave (the Dreamer) Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".

Porsche had already screwed up any chance of it succeeding by making it's predecessor, the 924, a Porsche body with a weak, Audi engine. I think the American market failed to buy into the greatness of the 944 because of inevitable memory of the original. Great car, though. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Great car, though.I pretty much agree with your point except that, by all accounts, the 924/944/968 series WAS a success. At least from a sales perspective, it was accepted by the masses. If you look at the sales numbers, the watercooled series outsold all the other Porsche models combined in most, if not all, years they were produced. The problem wasn't the masses, it was with people who already owned Porsches. Also, I can tell you from experience that the original 924 was a DOG...I owned an '81 and the motor was more like a tractor engine than a sportscar engine. I agree that this fact turned a lot of people off on the whole series early on. Can't blame them...but they still sold a TON of 924s somehow. I also had an '84 944 for years (non-turbo) and that was the best car I ever owned: it felt like I could do whatever I wanted in that car and still not get killed. When I went to turbos later, sure, they were fire-breathing beasts...very fast but somehow not as "quick" as my old N/A 944. The turbos were a lot heavier and really a completely different animal than the "normal" 944s. I really liked both. I still look at the classifieds sometimes but I'm guessing I'll go with a used "993" type 911 next. The prices are finally coming down on those... None more black.
Dave da Dude Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 CARS !! I know this is a guitar forum. BUT, how else are you going to get that hot, fast lickin' "guit t' da gig"? BTW, CaevanO'Shite, my XKE (coupe) was re-painted (it was definetly not "original" condition) Cadillac "Admiralty Blue", which was a meal-flake navy blue. Someplace there's a picture of me with it. If I ever find it, I'll post it. Dave Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".
James-Italy Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 Cool car Dave. I remember as a kid I jumped the fence with some friends of a denist near my house and we popped the hood on one of those babies just to get a glance at the engine. We didn't touch anything except the latch- we just wanted to get a look at those 12-cylinders. My Gear My Attempts at Music
Dave da Dude Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 No James, not 12 cylinders. My XKE was a REAL one, 6 cylinders, double overhead cam, three SU's and dual exhaust. Not to mention the mods I mentioned before. A lot of goodies for only six cylinderss and 3.8 liters (242 ci, I think), but it FLEW , above 50mph (80 kph) anyway. Ahhhh. The good ole' days. Fast cars, fast women, and slow life. BTW, to everyone under the age of 25, THIS is why you should "Just Do It". When you get older you won't. At least not until the kids are gone and you're that white haired guy driving the cool car. And physically unable to safely wring it out. YES, I am advocating go as fast as you can as long as you can. You won't be able to go nearly that fast later (guitars too). Dave Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".
Dave da Dude Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Hey guys! Back to GUITARS. I just went to Musician's Friend and they show the "Les Paul Special Double Cut" for $1909.99. A long, LONG ways from $795. Do I have the wrong model? Dave Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".
Dave da Dude Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 OK. Now I understand. I went to ebay, typed in (search) "gibson sc" and the very first listing (ending in 12 hours)was a double cut lp in sunburst, my favorite color. AND that color was ONLY offered in 1997/1998. That's makes it a collectible!! James, you're going to have to help me out on this "blaming the (gorum) guys" for "making me" buy this. Maybe THIS is what I've "always wanted" instead of the semi-hollow, sunburst 335 type. Dave the Incorrigible PS I also just now went to the Gibson site and found the "Faded", "Standard" & "Classic" model. Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".

DaveMy friends dad tells me "You have to have at least six guitars before you get married. This way one you add one, it just assimilates into the collection, and your wife will never notice." LOL Shut up and play.
