Depends on the amp. On some amps, you can do this with a simple adjustment of the bias control. A lot of modern amps have preset bias switches that allow you to just put in the new tubes and flip the switch.

 

On other amps it can be dangerous though. Put a set of EL 34s in a Fender Twin and you can expect damage to the amp because the tubes will draw more current than the amp can provide. Throw in a set of 6V6s and you can kiss those tubes goodbye - they won't be able to handle the plate voltage.

Hi ridger, welcome aboard! You should post your amp model and details of the tubes you are considering replacing. I've no doubt that someone here will point you in the right direction, certainly no one will let your amp come to any harm. Good Luck.
