similar available from his fellow Yardbird..

Surely this is due???

My fave record was Live with Jan Hammer

If you dont like Jan Hammer avoid , but I do

& Becks playing here is straight from the gut/

heart/balls :evil::love::cool:

Truth and Blow by Blow. Young Rodney was the perfect singer for Beck. Pity he never found another decent one. Haven't heard his latest one though.I don't think he tours much but there's some concerts in the UK later this year - lucky buggers.

Aaah, I kinda like the instrumentalist-Beck, at least as much as anything he's done with vocals, lyrics, etc.

I think that Guitar Shop was a cool lp. When that first came out I used to play it for young kids who pretty much only liked real "new" stuff (he he he, now that's "old"... ) and detested anything allegedly "classic rock" and the like. Selected tracks from that and Steve Vai's Passion And Warfare would really turn some heads and get some "Whoa! Holy shit! Play that again!"-type responses. -k

I really really love You Had It Coming. It is classic Jeff Beck with some of the ugliest guitar sounds and the most sublime and muscular playing. It is in solid rotation in my car.

Jeff Beck is head and shoulders my favorite electric player. Sometimes I hate the sounds he uses and sometimes I feel transported but I am never bored.

Both good albums. Very different in style! Neither one tops my list, but then I have trouble picking a favorite - they are all so damn good!

May all your thoughts be random!

The interesting thing about Jeff Beck is how DIFFERENT his music is as he evolves every few years.

It certainly seems, (and he himself admits in interviews), that it often takes relationships with others to bring out the best in him. When those relationships "click", it's great, when they don't, (Carmine Appice), it can be weak.

In the "early Beck" days that partner was Rod Stewart. Considering the era this was made, it's fabulous, exciting stuff. If this band could have stayed together... it could have been one of the most popular and "biggest" in the world... Ce la vie...

Then there's the "Popular Beck" of the Blow by Blow and Wired period. Blow by Blow is particularly cool imho, but I love the higher energy of Wired as well. Jeff Beck and the Jan Hammer Group Live... shows off Jeff and Jan blazing away in improv fury... For years THIS was my favorite JB album!

Some of the following albums had good moments, but often lacked a bit in songwriting and innovation... Partly because Jeff didn't have a distinctive partner or he was retreading old ground. Guitar Shop for example is a great "chops" cd, but didn't break much new ground.

Who Else, and especially You Had It Coming DO have Jeff moving into new territory, and like roy d, it's in regular rotation in my car. I LOVE this cd... it's everything I like about Jeff... great, emotional content, interesting and edgy time and sounds... cool songwriting...

His tours supporting the last two cd's have been FANTASTIC. Unlike Page or even Clapton, who in many people's opinion have their "better days" behind them... Jeff's playing on the recent tours clearly illustrates he's GROWN in his skills and imagination. I think Jennifer Batten is his new "partner" ala Jan Hammer in that era... But those shows were among the best I've ever seen ANYONE play... Total control. Incredible sound. Great emotional content. Plus he can draw on both the newest material and the "best" of the older stuff. If he comes ANYWHERE near you and you're a fan... It's a MUST SEE show. I bet you're NOT disappointed!!!

Can you tell I liked them? :thu:

PLUS... he put the cd's out and toured twice in 3 years... Talk about "Beck 'ola"!!!

For those of you who know Jeff's music from earlier in his career and haven't heard You Got It Coming... you're in for a treat and a suprise. It's not much like anything he's done before...

But it's MY new favorite.

Thank god that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the earlier material as well!!!

Beleive it or not I thought "Flash" was a great album. Becks playing was out of control(meaning that in a good way). Some of his anger spilled into his playing on that album and he took it out on his guitar. But as far as his best: Blow by Blow and Wired, with Guitar Shop and There and Back following. I would have put Beck-ola and Truth on top if the production was better, after all they are classic, but in terms of overall playing Im sticking to what I said.

I agree with guitarplayer.

Beck is deserving of enormous respect because like only a handful of others (Miles Davis among them) he's never afraid to explore new music and he never rests on his laurels.

He could have made a career of retreading "Wired" but he didn't. Not everything he's done has worked but I think he's come out WAY ahead of his peers in terms of remaining relevant.

i am holding in my greesee hands "yardbirds"

the dvd of their career and jbeck is interviewed and there is film of him w/ that band. i was going to raise this on another thread-why do they NOT include the complete take of a given song-either they cut it short or there is voice-over and it totally spoils it for me.

getting back to jeff beck he is(i guess) friends

w/ the remaining members of yardbirds(i think he is included on their new album)-it didnt seem so back when he was inducted into the r&r hallo'fame...

fav album? truth

Jeff has been my favorite guitarist since I saw him on Dick Clark's "Where the Action Is" when I was just a kid. He did "Mister Your a Better Man Than I" and it completely changed my concept of what guitar playing was all about. I saw him with the current lineup a couple of years ago and I was so blown away I couldn't talk about anything else for days! I got "Crazy Legs" and an out of print soundtrack he did called "Frankie's Place" at the same time a few years ago and WOW what a different pair of recordings and they were pretty close together in time I think. Anyway, I wind up listening to "Frankie's Place" as much as any of his albums. Has anyone seen the movie it is the soundtrack for? I think it is Australian and I don't know if it ever had a theatrical release in the US. I would love to see it! Anybody?

I've only heard the Truth album, but I need to check out Blow By Blow, since many of you have enjoyed it.

I like most of the songs on the Truth album. I really like Beck's sense of tone. The bassplayer Ron Wood also amazes me too.

For me, Blow by Blow, followed by Truth and Wired. I like his new one a lot too; of all the guitar guys from that period he alone continues to keep it new. Some great playing of his that some people might not be aware of is on Roger Waters' "Amused to Death" album from the early 90's - Beautiful melodic stuff and some nasty slide-work.

I have always liked JB, but with his last 2 releases (and attending a drop dead awesome performance) I realize how truly innovative his music is. Artists change and adapt as they go through their lives, and JB just keeps on finding new genres and approaches which are unequalled and unheard of in the music biz. The King of Tone, Master of the Eternal Feedback! He's never been a huge seller, but ask any of your favorite guitarists who they listen to.

I think I prefer Who Else over You Had It Coming.

I think we can all agree Beck is one thee

stylists ever to pick up a guitar

Thats why it amazes me that his label Epic

havent put out a dvd showcasing his talent

Maybe his crime is that he isnt dead ??

There is a grainy Video out of him playing

the Royal Albert Hall 20 plus years back

Just 4 numbers, Pump , Star Cycle , Goodbye

Pork Pie Hat & Hi Ho Silver , plus a star

jam with Page & Clapton on Layla.

Give me a break!

A pretty good performance by Beck, if I recall.

I also remember seeing him on TV in the year or so following Blow By Blow, I think it was on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, he played "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" on a Les Paul...

I think Jeff Beck is one of the most under-rated players out there. I absolutely loved the album with "Goin Down" ...I think it was called "The Jeff Beck Group". Came out before "Blow by Blow" or "wired". Anyway, that was my favorite...but I think the best is yet to come.

That's the amazing thing, were still talking about a guitarist who made his mark originally in 1965-66(earlier?) and is still cutting edge......jeeze,is it that long?.......going on 40 years in 2 years from now.Amazing!!I remember arguing with my childhood friend who said that we'll forget about Beck in 2 or 3 tears and I was insisting we wouldn't,I guess that's one argument I won big time.Anyway,no particular favorite album/CD's,just favourite select jems from all of them.

Does anyone remember the Jeff Beck /Carlos Santana Guitar Player special edition from the late nineties? The front cover had Santana on one side and a picture of Beck on the other. Santana was doing a record signing here in Sydney and when I gave him the magazine to sign he hesitated for a moment- then signed the picture of Jeff Beck! Another reason for Becks longevity is that he has'nt exactly suffered from over-exposure like his fellow Yardbirds. And at the time when Clapton, Page and Hendrix reigned as guitar gods, Beck was always a little erratic and lurked a little more in the shadows. I've never hesitated in naming Truth as one of the greatest albums of all time and am amazed at how few people even know of it's existence. Gonna go drag out all my Jeff Beck records! Thanks guys - you've made an old Jeff Beck fan happy! :) Btw - he also did a nice job on Mustang Sally on Buddy Guy's Damn Right I've got the Blues (from memory - I think the record got a grammy) :thu:

Re: The album Flash - Jeff's playing was, as ever, great;and I like the People Get Ready reunion with Rod Stewart .....but what the hell happened to DRUMS in the eighties????!!

I don't really remember that per se, but I do remember that they toured together in the mid nineties -- 1994 or 1995? I saw the gig at the Shoreline Ampitheatre on the San Francisco peninsula. Beck had his Guitar Shop group (Terry Bozzio on drums and Tony Hymas on keyboards) augmented with Pino Palladino on bass. They were fantastic.

The last two CD's and the last two tours both completely knocked me out. I've always been a fan and was inspired by him since the Yardbird days.

I have the vinyl In front of me. It's one of

my favorite, if not the favorite Jeff Beck Albums

I've heard.

The Dylan cover of "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" is a killer cover, regardless of who, what or when.

You're all wrong! His best album is "Beckology," the box set! Especially if you have it in the guitar case box. Three discs of Beck's history, tons of pictures in the book... how can this not be the best? Was there a "no greatest hits" rule that I missed? His new stuff is incredible, too. And yes, in concert, he still rocks. I don't know how my wife could fall asleep during the show!

 Sounds cool! I overlooked that one, but there's too many seriously good cd's, lp's, etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum to keep up with and hopelessly try to afford! That would be a full time job in itself!
