I want to buy an electric guitar. I want to spend around 700-800 Can. But I have no idea what to buy. I was thinking about getting a Epiphone Les Paul nock-off but I read some bad reviews aboout it. I was also told to look into a mexican. If it helps I am looking for a versitile guitar and my playing style is mostly rock. Please help.

D-Prime,

That's 700-800 CANADIEN dollars. I think that's about 550-650 US dollars, not sure, I haven't followed the exchange rate since I was in college at Northern Vermont (50 miles from the Canadien border).

For around $500 - $650? I'd suggest something like a high end Schecter or used Fender American Fat Strat. A Fat strat is by far my favorite guitar. Incredibly versatile and they've got 50 years of ergonomics under their belt. They've definitely got the comfort thing down. Schecter's are also quite nice and higher end models like the C-1 Classic or Tempest Special both use real Seymour Duncan p/ups instead of just "Duncan Designed" They're well put together and have a pretty good feel.

Also for $600 you might want to consider a Carvin Bolt. They've VERY well made American gutiars. You can customize them like a banshee. You can get three different types of single coils and three different types of bridge humbuckers. Very good guitars but after customization and all they can get pricey. There's always the prebuilt models too but you can't customize them. Look at Guitar\'s In Stock page.

Here's my 2 cents. I would get a Made in Mexico (MIM) Fender Stratocaster. They are made nearly as well as the American Standard Strats at a fraction of the price. A new MIM standard model Strat can be had for a little over US$300. However, if you have $500 to $600 to spend, there a better model MIM available. I would lean toward the model advertised in Muscian's Friend catalog called the Deluxe Super Strat which has top end features for a moderate price of US$559.

It includes an ash body (which is better than poplar on the std. MIM), gold plated vintage hardware, super fat pickups for better tone, super switching with 7 pickup combinations (this will allow you to get a Tele like tone in addition to the Strat tone). I would get it with a rosewood fretboard and the sunburst finish shown in the catalog (this Strat really looks neat). I prefer transparent finishes like Sunburst over solid colors as they have to use a better piece of wood with fewer knots and dings. It also comes with a $55 gig bag.

The Strats are very versatile and great for rock, blues, country, jazz, etc. They also tend to keep a decent resale value.

Actually, a mexican Fender Fat Strat will set you back $400 then you'd have $200 to upgrade pickups and you'd have a guitar that would blow away guitars that cost twice as much.

The Jimmy Vaughn MIM Strat might be the best steal in that price range. They seem to be very consistant in the QC department.
I really don't know what to put here.

Well, I guess it would depend on the type of electric guitar sound you prefer. If you like a classic two humbucker sound I would look at and for a DeArmond M-70 or M-72. These guitar were made by Guild before they Guild was acquired by Fender. Fender discontinued them, and then "reissued them as Squire Series 24 (or some such). The Dearmonds are far superior to the new Squires. I bought one (NOS) this summer an it is terrific!. Tried the new Squires and was unimpressed.

In any event the DeArm onds are frequently on Ebay and available in the $200 - 300 range. Check out the reviews on Harmony-Central. If you bid on an Ebay DeArmond, be sure that it still has the DeArmond USA Goldtone pickups. Some barbarians swap these out and auction the guitar with some other cheapo pickups.
