pauldil Posted November 30, 2002 Posted November 30, 2002 I'm a big admirer of jazz guitarist Joe Diorio, but hadn't heard any of his stuff in a long time. I just found out he has some stuff out on mp3.com. The guy has always impressed me, not just his sigle-line stuff, but the voicings he uses when he comps are really cool. Anyone else listen to him? Here's a tune he does with Robben Ford: Blues for all space cadets Paul
min7b5 Posted December 3, 2002 Posted December 3, 2002 I loved his book, Intervalatic Designs, ( at least I think that's the tittle and spellling ) that he put out decades ago. www.ericskye.com
AlChuck Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 It's Intervalic Designs for Jazz Guitar -- did it really come out decades ago? I can't seem to find any date of publication info on the web... It's one of those books I keep telling myself I'll get once I've mastered all the basic stuff, which still seems like decades away to me... sigh...
min7b5 Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 I remember going through it in high school, which was early eighties for me. www.ericskye.com
AlChuck Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 I'm going to write Intergalactic Designs for Jazz Guitar when I get good enough to...

AlChuck, not sure, but I think it came out around '78-79. Some very cool ideas in that book. I remember that it took me a while to get used to his playing at first, becuse it sounded so different than the guitarists I was listening to at the time. Then I heard some of his early 60's stuff with Sonny Stitt (great stuff!), before he got into the intervalic stuff. I could then see where his playing had evolved to include the newer approach, and he soon became one of my favorites. m7b5: I checked out your web site. Nice arrangements! Sounds very full. Paul
Mark Zeger Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 My guitar teacher used that Diorio book back in the late '70s. His other favorite was Van Eps' "Harmonic Mechanisms".
doc taz Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 That Harmonic Mechanisms sounds like a great book. Of course, if I had the time, I'd go get Mark Levine's massive jazz encyclopedia. Covers everything from theory, instrumentation, and artist history (so I've been told). sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
