Your first guitar?

My first acoustic was a $20.00(cdn)piece of crap that my sister owned.I think the strings sat about half a foot above the fretboard. It hurt like hell to play,I could barely even make a barre chord on the damn thing.

In the long run though it was probably an asset, strengthening my left hand and building up callouses.I have no idea where it is today.

My first electric was a Fresher Les Paul copy that my parents got me.It had a real bitchin'tone. I even tried to put the lead pick-up in an S.G. I owned. I still have the Fresher; the S.G. is long gone.

Man made me the beer I am .

Back when I was a boy, we didn't have no dad-blamed "music superstores"...

You had to take your axe, go chop down an alder and a maple tree...

Whittle yourself a neck and body...

Mine the metal for parts, strings and so on...

Build a forge and smithy all the parts...

And only then...

Figure out how to turn the mill stream into a power generator so you could plug in the amp you build with your own hands...

Kids today, don't appreciate nothin'...

Got it TOO EASY, they do.

Oh yeah, we had to walk 5 miles each way for guitar lessons...

In the snow.

Uphill both ways.

early 70's Hagstrom, with a strat style body and 3 cheezewiz pickups. I ripped all the gut out of it, bought a single dimarzio humbucker, cut a piece of crome plated something for a pickguard, filled the holes in with bondo, rerouted for the humbucker and rebuild with just that humbucker and an on/off switch, no volume!!!!!! It had a truss rail (like a t shape) not a rod, and the thinnest neck I have eve seen.

I worked all summer to buy a used Marshall Major and 2 8x10 cabs from a buddy.

Man do I wish i still had that guitar and stacks. My ears are still ringing....

Hope this is helpful.

Keep it up, warlock. :) Good luck with the playing. Nice axe.

Ahh... Well I SUPPOSE my first guitar was my mothers acoustic. It was (is) a 3/4 length classical guitar - no IDEA of the brand.. no name on it. When I found it it had about 3 strings missing.. no 2... I think the low E and the B. Anyway - I went and took it to the guitar tech here, got it restringed, and gave it to my girlfriend to practice on, and she wanted to learn the bass, and had no money. :D

BUT, that being said, I barely played that guitar. My TRUE first guitar was my Ibanez, and as some of you know I went through a LONG decision making process before I found the baby I wanted. But I DID find the baby I wanted. I went into the store and inquired, and played a black one, no pick. I didnt know how to play so I sat there and thumb strummed some basic chords I had learned, thanks to tedster, and tried out all the frets. It sounded nice. But I put it back to think about it.

I went to the big city the next day and went into the local music superstore. On the wall was a jewel blue sa60, and a black one like the other I played. The black one had a roland midi pickup already installed, so I left it there. I picked up the jewel blue one, found a pick, played it on an amp and fell in love. Also tried out an RX40, which was a decent guitar... pretty much exactly the same, but more of a strat copy... red with a white pickboard. I didn't like the white pickboard or the shape and feel... too bulky for me. So I stuck with the streamlined body of the SA. And the gods rejoyced.

I ended up falling in love with the jewel blue. Now I look at all the different colours, and Im interested in getting a nice blur or green Ibanez acoustic. My next guitar will most likely be an axe I put 10-52's on and go down to B tuning permanently, so Im looking at an S-370 (red rock flat... or even the purple one!) or a G-400 custom (yellow! woot). But enough.

My first guitar was a no-name classical acoustic with heavy gauge steel strings! Yeah, ouch!!! The guitar had seen better days, with gaping cracks along the edges of the body, and a neck that could double as a bow.

When I was REALLY little, there were the bodies of an old banjo and some big, fat blond wood guitar body in the attic. I never knew what they were doing up there. For all I know, the guitar could have been some rare old Gibson, or even a Stromberg, as far as that goes. I just can't remember! My Mom tried to get me piano lessons, but, as I was five at the time, I had absolutely NO interest, and she regretfully didn't push it. By the time I had interest in learning anything musical, it was actually the drums. By that time, the old guitar was gone from the attic. The drum lessons crapped out, too, because the lessons were through the school, and the program was dropped due to buget restraints. So, as "luck" would have it, by the time I set my sights on playing the guitar, that Eminee piece o' shit came into the picture!

Be careful what you toss in the trash! It may serve someone well in the future...

Man, this is a cool thread. I almost forgot all about my white Supro that I had about 20-25 years ago. Got it for about 35 bucks from a kid down the road. Then my dad got me a 1.5 watt amp from Sears (he was no fool--I wouldn't have wanted to hear my playing then either)! I remember getting some really unusual sounds out of it, none of which I'd call desirable. On the other hand, maybe if I had one today I could pull off some "Vai-ish" sounds without even meaning to!

I've only seen a couple of Supros since then, so I either had a really rare classic, or a real piece of crap that nobody will admit they own-not even to sell!

You've got the best guitar

You've got the best amp

Now get the best pick!

My first guitar was an Ibanez Roadstar II that my parents bought me for making the honor roll in 10th grade(1984). Took lessons for a few years and then stopped playing...Just got back into playing a few months ago. I had to buy my first amp myself and don't remember the name but it cost $50 and was about 5 watts with no Overdrive....I finally sliced the speaker to give it some distortion.

My first was a Sears Silvertone archtop acoustic with 1 inch action, well okay, 1/2 inch. It was really my older brother's, but he never played it and soon forgot that it existed. My first electric was a Crestwood semi-hollow bodied squealer that was way cool back in 1969.

Well, my mom had a cheap classical guitar in the '70s that I used to mess around with. When I was in fourth grade, the seed was planted. I learned my basic seven open chords (E Maj, E min, G Maj, A Maj, A min, C Maj, D Maj) and the four-string F variation. This served as my foundation, even though I basically put down the guitar for several years. Then, I started back up in my freshman year of HS. Eventually, my mom bought me an electric for my birthday. That was it. A black Peavey T-60, actually not that bad a guitar. Couple of humbuckers, tappable, IIRC. I went out and bought a Peavey Backstage Plus 35-watt amp w/ a 12" speaker, and that wonderful feature, "distortion." Man, I thought I kicked ass; and, considering how few kids in my area actually had electric guitars back then, I probably did. Oh, the crappy ol' days... :D

  • 1 month later...

My first git was a flying V.....made by SEARS! Christmas present back when I was 16. Looked good, hanging on my bedroom wall. After a year, I started to actually play it. After an additional 6 months, I learned how to TUNE it.(bassackwards?)

I played the hell out of it right up 'til it nearly amputated my left pinky. It had one of those retarded '80s style headstocks (see photo)

and the nut broke, sending the E string into my hand at high velocity. (5 stitches). I think my next git was a Univox. Complete piece of garbage, but it never tried to gimp me :D
