myles_rose
As I move around to various clients, stores, and on the net, some deals or offerings strike me as worth mentioning .... Yesterday after my stint for the day at GT, I had a call to hit Norm's Rare Guitars ( 18969 Ventura Bl. Tarzana CA. 91356 818-344-8300 ) to check out some amps that they just got in. One of them may be a find, a Fender Black Face Super Reverb. I do not know what sort of price they are asking, but it's in pretty decent shape, a little better than most from this era cosmetically. Condition wise from a working standpoint, its a really nice amp. The bias was off, and the output tubes were old and shot, so the amp was set up with a new set of 6L6 Svetlanas and rebiased. The caps are good and the amp is quiet. Jeff Lund played for me in his usual myriad of styles I can call upon from him, and this amp is a winner. As far as tube finds ... on the net a few new great ones: http://users.erols.com/bluestat/ The folks at KCA .... NOS Bendix 5992 Super 6V6GTs---------$ 85 Per matched pair -----------$ 40 Per single tube Some are labeled Hytron, but all are legendary Bendix 5992s. These are the most durable 6V6GT ever made. Made for the military in the early 1950s, and VERY rare. Brown bases. Very limited supply. [ These are amazing in a Deluxe, a Carr Slant 6V, or in a THD Univalve] [by the way, the [ .... ] are my personal comments that at times are pointless] ........................................................................................ ANOS (Almost NOS) RCA 12AX7As-----------$ 22 Each These may be unused but I'm not totally confident about this. Most likely "pulls" from unused equipment, but may be very slightly used. Selling these at less than half the price of NOS. RCA ocatgon marking is present but the RCA logo has been reprinted on the glass. All tubes test as new and test good for noise and microphonics. White boxes with RCA labels. Even if these have a few hours on them, they will outperform and outlast new production tubes. [ ... pretty great tube, they last for decades, and I have seen many of these still in a lot of amps 40+ years old as original equipment. When I have pulled them to test them, they still have more output than new tubes of today by a wide margin} ........................................................................................ NOS Mazda (France)-----------$ 42 Per Matched pair, $ 20 Per single tube. Mazda is known as an excellent source for vacuum tubes! These military sound fantastic in my Deluxe Reverb amp, very smooth. These got an excellent rating in "Vacuum Tube Valley's" 6V6 shootout tests. { I am currently using one of these in my own THD Univalve. Lots of folks love it, and at this single tube price, its less than most new 6V6's that cannot hold a candle to this tube. If you have a Univalve, Peters, or GT Single, you HAVE to have one of these in your single ended class A amp inventory ... frankly, there is no discussion on this matter, even if you disagree with me ] ........................................................................................ NOS JAN Philips/Sylvania 6V6GT --------- $ 35 Per matched pair , $ 17 Per single tube Sylvania 6V6GT's are an excellent quality tube which tend to be a little brighter sounding than the RCA's and GE's. [ If you have a Carr Slant 6V, get four of these. Bias the center two @ 27.5mA (they are the class A/B pair), and stand back. The touch of added brightness of these really compliments this amp. These are also great in Deluxe tweeds and browns, prior to the blackface, as the blackface was a brighter circuit. Where else can you find a set of 6V6's for $35.00 ? Even "normal every day" ones? } ........................................................................................ NOS GE 6BQ5/EL84-----$ 70 Per matched pair , ---$ 140 Per matched quartet Excellent in your Blues Jr., Matchless, Vox AC-30, AC-15 or Dr. Z amp. Sweet sounding in guitar and audiophile amps. Some in original GE boxes, some labeled and boxed as Admiral. [ maybe out of the price range for a lot of us, but in a AC-30 original, with its heat problems, one of the only tubes that will hold up and sound like they used to] [good price too, as these are getting harder to find all the time] ........................................................................................ Hope some of this was helpful to somebody out there.... Just stuff from my soemtimes interesting finds.... Regards, Myles S.
