Redwing...or, I did it all myself

This is really just a test to see if I'm "getting it"....Recorded a ditty tonight, converted files from CD to WAV to mp3, loaded it up to my website. Used my Yairi DY92"June Bug" guitar, with one of my Dynafield pickups....through an ART Tube Mic preamp direct to a TEAC CD recorder...no compression, no EFX, no EQ...just flat onto the CD...

The guitar is strung with regular Martin brass strings, 12-56 ga. Capoed at the 2nd fret and played from the "C" position(for those of you that are into the mucky details). If you have the time, let me know what you think of the basic tone....

Thanks

I think it sounds really good. It has a very upfront quality and it seems well balanced. Adding some subtle reverb would bring out some different qualities and dimension, but there's no need to fix what isn't working and it sounds good to me.

I have no idea what kind of pickup you are using. Is it an under the strings type ?

Steve- Thanks for the nice comments....

The pickup is a Dynafield, one that I developed about 12 years ago(you wouldn't believe how much I spent on the patent...). It is magnetic, and uses a neodymium disc glued to the bridgeplate, directly behind the row of bridge pins. Then I suspend a lo-z coil under the magnet, effectively using the top of the guitar as it's own mic diaphragm...very effective in that regard.

There are a couple of idiosyncracies about the design...since you now have a VERY large mic diaphragm, it really likes low frequencies, especially loud electric bass and kick drum, so it's not the best for a high gain situation in a combo setting(solo it's cool). Also, since the top of an acoustic guitar is tuned very low, just to get the lows out of that small box, the Dynafield sounds like it's overemphasizing the low frequencies, when in reality, it's just mimicing top movement. I control some of this with a simple tuneable bass rolloff built into the unit itself...allows one to tune the pickup to the instrument. But, as you can hear in the sample, it is entirely controllable, as there is NO eq at all on the recording.

Dead ass accurate to the guitar though, once it's set up properly.

Here's a photo....
