music-man
Yo - normally I'm over in LowDown, but I thought I'd check in over here to see if you all have some advice (I searched first, but came up with nothing) ... I'm in the process of getting a good combo amp for live stage work with my electric cello. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the SWR acoustic amps (California Blonde and Strawberry Blonde). I was leaning toward the Strawberry (80W with 10" + Tw). But then I got worried about having enough power - I've already lost money on a combo I returned b/c it didn't have enough juice to boost my cello over a band (drum set, bass, piano, vox) in a smallish club. So ... I bought the California (100W, 12" + tw), but now I'm not sure. It definitely has more headroom, but I'm finding I don't like the sound of the California as well as the Strawberry. I think one explanation is that the Strawberry's smaller cabinet is "tighter" and less "boomy" ... but whatever it is, I think I prefer the Strawberry's sound, if I were confident of its power. So ... Does anyone have thoughts/experience with whether the Strawberry Blonde has enough juice to keep up with a full band w/drums onstage? [FWIW - cello is roughly in the same range as guitar ... except with a C instead of E on the bottom.] Thanks for your help!

You know, I don't know if I'd neccessarily want a tweeter to amplify cello...that could get real annoying quick with bowing, I would think. I'd rather try to get some more brightness out of a cone speaker than to try to tame a horn's "squawk" with bowing noise. Have you tried turning the amp around so it doesn't face you? music-man
Yes, thanks Chip - I'm (also) a bass player, own Eden/SWR gear, tried a number of the (other) combos. You're right about the tweeter - it's very harsh for bowing ... BUT both these amps have controls that allow you to cut the tweeter out. Strawberry Blonde has an On/Off switch and the California Blonde has an attenuator knob. Without the tweeters, though, both amps are really warm-sounding.
