Johnson amplifiers?

I was at a music store the other day and played through a Johnson Millennium 150. This is supposed to be the 1st "tube" modeling amp. The tube part is only in the pre-amp but it sounded pretty darn good. Does anyone out there have any experience or inside info on this unit?? I've been looking at tube amps (after being set straight by other forum regulars) but still checking out the new stuff coming out. Thanks in advance.

A buddy of mine has one and uses it for his bar band. He loves it even though he knows that if you put it side by side with a good tube amp the tube amp would have the edge but it is so close and so versatle that the benifits for him outweigh the minuses.

I've had the Johnson combo amp for about 2 years now. It's great for a modeling amp, but it does sound digital for my ear. Maybe I have had just that one amp for too long. I've actually been keeping an eye open for a new amp for some time now. I recently played through a Vox AC30 and LOVED it, but that may not be what you are looking for, as it is a straight "amp". I did go to a King Crimson show a few months ago and was surprized to see Adrian Belyeu playing through Johnson combos.

My final thought about the amp is that it is a little comlicated to navigate and edit, unless you are a plug-and-play type. Let me know what you think.

I'd rather have a Rocktron Taboo Twin. You can emulate other amp sounds, instant response, more "direct" sounding.

The Johnson is sort of squashed sounding to me, and the high end is a bit thin (IMO). It's not a modelling amp; it's just eq and DSP functions. I think the Line6 stuff sounds more realistic, but it's not there either. The Johnson does a realistic hiwatt sound, something Line6 for some reason ignores, but the rest of the Johnson presets are sort of ambiguous to me.

I think the way to test a "modeling amp" is to plug in, play an open chord and spin the patch knob - so that you're hearing each patch only for a moment. You'll notice a common "sound" between each one after awhile, and if you get the amp - you'll possibly hear it all the time. The weird thing about modelled sounds is that you can't eq that out - it's there. I don't know if it's the sound of the converters, or byproducts of the math of the software, but try it: spin the knob.

This is what I like about the Voodoo Valve/Taboo from Rocktron: it has a "sound", but it's a "nice" one, and not as obvious. In fact, if I remember correctly the "sound" is at 2.4k, for whatever reason.

I've got Pod Pro, which is nice for quick notepad-type things, but I'll stick with real amps.
