Fireball
Hi, i think this is the first time i've posted on the guitar forum, so please be gentle. ! ok, i've got a question for all you guitar gurus. i've recently joined a punk/pop (or whatever they call it) band who plays along the style of Green Day or Blink 182, and also some other popular modern rock stuff. and i'm finding that my existing gear isn't exactly right for the job. i have a Strat Plus w/seymore duncan humbucker pickup on bridge and a PRS Standard, and has the Marshall AVT heads and cabs. I used to play in a straight ahead rock band so the onboard distortion sounded fine. But now i'm finding that with these styles of music alot of fast palm muting is required and the onboard distortion is too smeared. What kind of distortion pedals can you recommend that will give me that green day sound? or are there other pieces of equipment that i need? i'd like to eventually record a bit with this band, so i guess good quality gear is good investment? thanks for your help. Sylver
Get a tube amp and crank it loud. Maybe an overdrive like a Tube screamer or something in front. Pedals won't give you what you want. I really don't know what to put here.
GuitarWolf
u got all the right equipment for playing music by sum41, Blink, NOFX and pennywise! (which i consider punk) i would say just use distortion and maybe get to know some alternate tunings...im a punker myself and I THINK the only fx ive heard used were compression, Fuz and wah wah...and maybe the whamy bar if you count that as fx. Try to get into the punk feel of music which is mainly an intro and an outro using all single notes and power chords everywhere else. To practice getting this feel download some Blink 182, find the tab for those songs on the internet and then just play along! the songs should take u about 10-30 secs to learn, there really easy! Well thats my $0.02 hope it helps YtseJam your Majesty!
Fireball
hi, thanks so much for the reply. i have to admit i'm not really into this type of music before, so i don't have much knowledge into it. i guess what i'd like to play is more pop than punk. i'll see what settings i can dial to make the sound tighter. Gabriel E.
You definitely have all the gear you need. For that kind of music, the less fx you use the better. Plug into the amp and crank it. If the sound "smears", you're probably using either too much bass or too much gain. Practice those downstrokes! I put the distortion at around 5-6, but this could differ depending on your amp, so med to med-high distortion, AND PUT THOSE SD HUMBUCKERS TO GOOD USE! YtseJam your Majesty!
