Mr. Hegwood
It's in the issue that just came out with Social Distortion on the cover. They finally got around to reviewing the ep that we released last year (we've got a new 13-song LP coming out July 22 - they'll probably review that in a year's time). It's a decent review, but they praise my playing to the exclusion of the other guys in the band. I even got my name in bold type. I also have to take credit for the swag idea that takes up the first third of the review. I should mention that Ape House is the name of the band and Crof-Tone is the record label. Anyway here it is: ***This shouldn't have anything to do with an album review, but Ape House's and Crof-Tone's collective idea of giveaway swag is a two-year-old Pizza Hut coupon with a Post-It attached. The note reads, "There's more where this came from...if you're a team player!" This smirking, wise guy humor fits the band's melodic pop-punk. To be honest, there's not much outside of Gil Hegwood's smart lead guitar that elevates this band from garage or local hero status, but the band's surely got its heart properly in place. Echoes of classic Rolling Stones pop and The Knack ring through the winking innuendo of "Chicks Dig Speed" and "Yeah!" "Sweet Connection" is the umpteenth song to give up finding a new way to say "I've been waiting my whole life for you," while "You're Not in a Band" is a motivational plea couched within tounge-in-cheek, hipper-than-thou posturing.*** After reading the review, our drummer exclaimed, "Sheeeeez...does this mean that we have to let Gil turn up even louder?!?!" One of the other national reviews that we got (in Shredding Paper) praised my "lovely licks," so I've been giving they guys a hard time about riding my coat tails Anyway, I'm not sure why the reviewer would mention the Stones; we don't sound anything like them, and to set the record straight, "Sweet Connection" is about the importance of having a reliable dope dealer (as none of us indulge in such things, I have no idea where the idea for that song came from). Any press is good press.
whitefang
Congratulations! I'm gonna have to find the CD and see what I think. I'm reluctant to go by reviewers because I feel they get more involved in excersizing their knowledge of adjectives rather than putting out straightforward reviews. To this day, I STILL don't know what "drum pyrotechnics" or "searing solo ambience" means! Don't indulge? Uh, OK! But finding a reliable dope dealer CAN be a hassle. It's why I eventually gave it up, among other reasons. All MY dealers either died, found Jesus or wound up in jail! What a grind! Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
Mr. Hegwood
Actually, you can download the tracks off of the four-song EP that was reviewed for free from our website www.apehouserock.com. We got pretty well liquored up and recorded and mixed the whole thing in a single six-hour session. Everything was done on the first take (and the sixth beer)
