overcomer
i was told i slandered an amp maker,,, i began by saying i think ____ makes great fine amps, i have owned 4 of them and had to return two for minor problems,, by UPS, i talked about how i had thought that since production had gone up and prices also, that : if he produces 200 one year and has 20 come back for problems, then that is a good ratio, if production goes up and he hires help and makes 400 then the return rate would be maybe 40-50. i asked others about them,,, and had only one comment that they had a bad experience with getting a "ghost noise fixed", all others were very positive... i wanted to talk about the fact that you have to buy these amps by UP and they get banged around, and you might have to return it that way, as i did on two occasions. i was blasted because i would dare be critical about an amp maker/tubes/UPS, and the whole schmeer... more to follow, how bout you? overcomer
i know tube amps require care, i am not a sniveling 18 year old ( sorry if you are hah), i had asked this amp maker by email why the amps are shipped with the tubes in the sockets and he told me" most guys put the tubes in the wrong sockets", now certain power tubes are shipped individually wrapped but the preamp tubes come in the sockets,, and they get banged around etc,, i had one ofhis amps and one of the power tubes began to "not work" and other words it shorted out, so he thought it needed to be resoldered, and asked me if i was good with a solder gun. well i drove 75 miles to an amp tech i know , he looked at it and found that the metal retainer was not touching the tube at the base, causing a short, all that had to be done was squeeze it together , easy huh? these are minor minor things...i know... more to follow
overcomer
i bought a pair of Ei el84 tubes to try in an amp of this particular makers ( remember i still think he makes great amps) to get more headroom out of it,, i bought them from a semi-big vendor, not one ( i found out later ) who tests his tubes in depth,,, well, when i plugged them in the amp, they sounded great, but in about 15 minutes one of them got too hot and broke,,, well, the guy sent me another one, and it too got too hot and broke in the socket, i emailed the amp maker and he said " i like them too but they have a high failure rate", the tube vendor said " i thought he would say that",, the first amp i bought from this maker ( remember, UPS) the amp came with a loose washer and a screw rolling around,, i thought nothing of it, till about 4 months later it began to blow fuses, sent it back, it came back in ten days, it was fine, something rubbing against the rectifier tube... great service , great amp, great amp maker,,, i bought another type of amp from him a couple years later,,,
overcomer
..a bigger amp with different tubes,,, it immediately had a ghost noise, when the note faded off it "octaved", we discussed whether the problem might be in the electrical outlets in my house, etc,,, finally i sent it back, and it had a bad filter.. i wanted to talk about quality control and shipping and UPS and high production rates,, this amp maker told me at one point " i know you are hard on your amps", and the amp in question was one i babied for about 15 minutes at a time,,, i record anyway, dont play more than an hour at a time.. i owned 4 of this manufacturers amps, wanted to talk about quality control and was branded a "slanderer". i dinged their sacred cow... amazing... they acted like i had a "beef" with this amp maker and i should have taken it up with him. well, i suppose that there is some meat to that point, BUT, I also used another amp maker and commented about certain quality control probes ( that everyone knows about) and they had no beef about that,,, well, see ya,,, what is your mileage>? Skip_dup1
you`re kidding me-an amp maker can get you kicked off a forum if you have a bit of a story about them? that sounds like total censorship.
g.
Actually a friend of mine kind of reviewed his use of Aguliar's 1x12 bass cabinet at another forum and though he said they sounded good for most things also mentioned that they couldn't handle a bass's low B string plucked with any authority without farting like they were on bad burritos. So he returned it, got a refund. Then someone from Aguilar sent him threatening email with a nasty, hostile tone. -- So I guess at least two things from Augilar have bad tone ; } . Skip_dup1
stuff like that should get totally exposed to the public-what idiocy. Of course, you could end up with Louie and Rocko knocking on your door at 2 a.m. with a gun butt...
Chip McDonald
I've worked at music stores basically all of my life. In the past 3 years or so, I can safely say: if it's shipped by UPS, anything can and probably will happen. Standard UPS procedure for taking something off the top shelf of the truck is to pull on it until it falls to the floor. If it's too big to wrap your arms around, to get it off the truck you push it off the back of the truck. And I've been told, that if *that* bothers me, I would recoil in horror at what goes on "back at the shop". In fact, I'd say that if a guitar can survive UPS in a hardshell case in a packing box, it should be able to go air cargo no problem; you're taking about the same risk I'd say. I'd say I've seen more tube amps come in broke n the past few years than ever - and it's completely not surprising. An amp maker that tells you their amp can't be damaged by UPS is either completely ignorant, or they're lying. There's not a lot of gear that's going to survive a 5 foot fall to a plate steel floor, only protected by a box. That's EXACTLY the kind of treatment an amp might go through with UPS, particularly a smaller one (like an amp head). Things that can go on that top shelf in the UPS truck are always going to be in jeapardy.
