Pod and co

Sorry if this has already been posted,

but do you know where I could find information about the best preamp for direct recording and direct PA application ?

I have a pod now but like to know if there's anything better (modeling or tube) in the market today.

Thanks for response

Vince

I gotsta stick up for my Johnson J-Station here! I've had the opportunity to mess with a Pod Pro fairly extensively now (it's a good buddy's) and I honestly like my J-Station better. Unfortunately, I'd have a hard-time recommending one right now because it looks like manufacturer's support might be drying up...
None more black.

I have a POD and I've just never liked it...it just sits on a shelf now...guess I really need to sell it or something.

I've tried most of the other amp modeling devices out there...excluding the modeling amps (Vetta, Vox), I really like the Digitech GNX/Genesis series. I got a Genesis 3 recently and it is great for demo recording. One thing I like is the 'dry track' output where it lets you send an unprocessed DI signal to the SPDIF output while simultaneously monitoring the effected/modeled sound. That way, you can 're-amp' your recordings later on with either real amps or the new software modeling plugins such as Nigel, Amplitube, and VST Warp.

I've also been playing around with the Amplitube demo lately and I'm pretty impressed by it. Anyone have any experience with Nigel and VST Warp?

One final thing...someone recently posted a review of Mesa's new Rectifier Recording Preamp on Harmony Central. The guy said he had tried everything from Palmer/Ampulator-style loadbox/speaker emulators to the Demeter silent speaker chamber...and in his opinion the new Mesa was by far the best. I'm really anxious to give this one a try. Anyone else heard it yet?

I didn't try the new rectifier preamp but I've got a mesa formula pre for two years and wasn't satisfied with it. the preamp was good, warm and responsive, but the speaker sim sucks.

It's not like plugging your tube amp's aux send right into your recording gear, but not far.

I have better results now with the pod.

And I'm not speaking about ease of use (presets !), weight (I had a rack with the formula, a compressor and a midiverb) and rapidity when installing...

no brainer. this unit is certainly killer when plugged into a tube amp and good cabinets, but not for direct recording and live application.

However, if you try the rectifier, be sure to post your impressions, maybe it's better.

Hope it helps

Yes, the Formula preamp seems to draw very mixed opinions...people either love it or hate it. I have no experience with it so can't comment except to say that I rather like the recording output on my Mesa Studio Preamp for some things.

However, FWIW if you buy into the Mesa hype on the Rectifier Recording Preamp, it should give much better results than the Formula. I will definitely post more if I ever find one to test.

Also saw your post on the new VHT Valvulator preamp...I agree, this also looks very cool, although it seems to employ similar technology to the Mesa Rectifier Recording preamp, at least for direct recording purposes.

I would recommend giving the software amp modeling plugins a serious look...from my experience so far with Amplitube, this could be a great solution for recording guitar without a real amp.

Mmmm... software amp sims are for sure the future of guitar sounds, as virtual keyboards already are. but for practical purposes I still need hardware boxes (gig at least)

I was in a HP/Compaq seminar today where they explained the strategy of the "new HP".

their message was clear : all analog industries will go to the digital domain in the next 10 years... the music business is going that way also, but it's not completed. I think in a few years every analog equipment will have disappeared, tubes included. don't get me wrong, I love the sound of tube amps and I'm always searching for that expressiveness in digital modeling for practical reasons (neighbours, transport, presets, versatility...), but I think we're not so far.

Can't wait for the next improvements.

Hi Swiggy,

I freelance as a music journalist for the swedish guitar mag FUZZ.

That combined with an interest for recording direct has led me to try everything on the market since the old Rockman.

If your are interested in hearing some of them please feel free to visit my web site Demo Station at:

http://home.swipnet.se/Nermarks_hemstudio/demostation.htm

There I post all the mp3-demos I record while reviewing guitar related equipment.

You will find mp3-files from the Vetta, DG Stomp from Yamaha and a few more.

Hope you enjoy it!
