Griffinator
I'm sure I'm not the only one on the planet who uses DAW software - so how do you keep latency from screwing up your timing? I'm finding that even the 20ms I manage to squeeze from Sonar is still throwing me off. Any suggestions? A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends. I'm using Sonar too and I see the slider in audio options under "mixing latency" that you set from fast to safe. FWIW, I've got mine all the way on fast (1.5ms) and it's working ok...I can BARELY sense a delay using Re-Valver. I'm not really sure this is the right thing to play with cuz I'm new to the input monitoring thing and "mixing latency" doesn't sound like it has much to do with the input side of things, does it? I'm a-lookin' for the manual now... BTW, what sound card are you using...does it use WDM drivers? If not, you might consider updating to WDM if possible. From what I've heard, it makes a big difference. 20ms is too much latency!!! None more black.
Griffinator
If you're not getting crackles and pops with the input monitoring engaged, then you've got stable latency. I'm using an SB Live Platinum 5.1 with a LiveDrive and WDM drivers and can't do any better than 20ms on a PIII 667 Win2K box. I'm thinking soundcard upgrade and processor upgrade are both in order. Also, I'm running Win XP on a 1.7GHz P-4 with a gig of RAM. I hadn't upgraded my computer for over five years, so when I did it, I REALLY did it. Of course, it's already been completely outclassed by the newer PCs but that's the just the nature of the beast. Still, I hear of people running P-3s with Win2K all the time without any big latency issues. If I were you, I think I'd start by upgrading the sound card and see if that helps. If not, then move on to a quicker processor maybe. Good luck!!! None more black.
