hi everyone, as my title says im planning to buy a tube head. To give you all a little backround Ill describe what i currently have. Right now i have a brand new Marshall 1960A cab(the 300w one). At this time i am running a crate gx1200 solid state head (pathetic i know). Now im planning to finnally upgrade to tube, and of course im looking for your opinions. I have a few ideas in my mind at this point. Ive been looking mostly at the Marshall heads so far, either the DSL or TSL 100. I have also been considering either a Peavey 5150, or a Crate BV120. Feel free to give me any other head ideas that pair well with the 1960 cab. Also, if this helps any, I play hardcore punk/metalcore sorta stuff so my key concern is volume, and a real nice distortion channel. Any and all opinions welcome, whatever opinions/ideas i get i plan to use before going to the guitar shop and trying these heads out for myself =)

Another option to consider...

Buy a 2x12 combo, and use your 1960 as an external cabinet. That way, you'll be able to just take the 2x12 for smaller gigs, and then take the whole schmear for bigger gigs.

I used to have a Marshall half stack. I got tired of not being able to lug it around in my car...too big for the back seat...too big for the trunk.

Just a thought. I'm mainly a Marshall user. But, I know of a guy who got a great deal on a Randall half stack...and the thing kicked some serious ass.

I would consider a TSL60. Unless you are planning to play stadiums in the near future a 100 watt head is not necessary. I used a JCM-800 50 watt for yaers in medium size clubs and a lot of the time it was too loud. Sure sounded great though! :D

I'm an elite hardcore dancer and part time player so I'll just tell ya what works for me. Carvin. They're the best! The MTS has some GREAT raunchy distortion and is loud as a beast! I use a Carvin Bel Air which, while you'd never expect it for hardcore, sounds AWESOME. I get compliments from all the guys with their Marshalls and PVs saying things like "Man, that amp is really cool! I wish I could get those tones outta my amp" (I use a lot of slightly broken up clean tones that Marshalls don't sound so great with) Plus, when you crank this thing, it's heavy as what but doesn't get congested like a lot of amps. I love the thing.

Peavey 5150s, PV XXXs, Mesas and Marshall JCM2000 DSL100s are all also great amps well worth checking out. I'd stay away from the Blue Voodoo though.

The amps you are considing are great but they're way too loud. No one needs 100watts any more. 40-60 watts will yeild more than enough volume through a 4X12.

-The Carvin MTS3200 is a great amp. I tried the combo version a few months back and was really impressed. Better than the Carvin Legacy or BelAir.

-A DSL60 will work nicely. TSLs are great too but do you really need a 3rd channel?

-If you can find a used one, a Rivera head would be awesome.

-An older 50 watt Marshall JCM800 head will totally rock.

Note: 5150s are great sounding amps but they seem to be "in the shop" too much. Unreliable??
