evan_chad
I have a simple issue that i hope someone on this message board can clear up for me. I was told by a salesman at a guitar shop that, per watt, tube amps are capable of cranking out more volume than thier solid state counterparts. Not trying to start a large debate on tube vs. SS here, just looking for a simple answer. Also if anyone would be able to answer a few more specific questions about halfstacks using tube or SS amps i would appreciate them leaving an email address in the post so i can talk with them personally, and get a bit more in depth. thanks for all who reply. Tedly Nightshade
This is true. I've heard the ballpark figure of 1 tube watt is as loud as 3 solid state watts, and that's about right in my experience. To get something like the results you can achieve with a 300 watt Ampeg SVT tube amp (at least the 70's ones) you would want 1000 watts of solid state. Also, when your tube amp is being pushed to the limit it will very likely sound a whole lot more agreeable than a solid state amp being pushed to the limit. Very likely indeed, although there are a few near-exceptions. Why the half stack? I can get a sound just as big and loud and meaty from a combo amp. Half stacks look cool though. Solid state half stacks suck, most times. Ted A WOP BOP A LU BOP, A LOP BAM BOOM! "There is nothing I regret so much as my good behavior.
