sidereal
I'm a drummer, not a guitarist. Seems I've been having a love affair with 7th chords and didn't realize it. Not to long ago, I started dating a musician. Being a drummer, I don't know much about chords, but I do know what I like. So when we listen to music, every time I say "wow, I love that little change there, what's that chord?" She replys "it's a 7th chord." Anyway, that's happened everytime I've mentioned cool chord changes. What is it about these chords? What the hell does all of this mean? Am I one-dimensional? Should I stop typing now? Just for the record.
Nollykin
hahaha I think you need to stop hyperventilating and just enjoy those chord changes hehehe Enjoy Nolly "Money, Bitchez and Cheese!" http://www.playspoon.com/nollykin/files/voxline.gif "I never thought about it, and I never stopped to feel - But I didn't want you telling me just what to think was real. whitefang
WOW! What kind of 7th chords were they? Major 7? Minor? Dimminished? Were they used as the main key of the song, or as intermediates? Hurry with the info, please! I wanna try out my Viagra!! Whitefang P.S. On the serious side, I always kinda liked them, myself. Major 7's have a nice vibe about them, don't they? I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
LDSGuitar
Listen to jazz, specifically Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery. Then you won't have to worry about being a drummer anymore, you'll want to be a guitarist. (Oh, and they use lots of seventh chords, too) Try "Four on Six" by Wes Montgomery. Wrave
Cmaj7, Fmaj7, Cmaj7, Fmaj7 - I could listen to those two chords change all day long. Serenity itself. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ME: "Nobody knows the troubles I've seen!" Unknown Voice: "The Shadow do!"
sidereal
Yeah, I shoulda been more specific... Major 7ths, definitely. I like 'em best when you don't expect them to be there. I think it must come from having grown up with all that 70s music. I'll check out Wes Montgomery. I've been meaning to get into that cat anyway. Just for the record. Tedly Nightshade
I had a lot of trouble getting to love Maj. 7 chords, until I discovered the Lydian mode, where for a C major 7 the F becomes an F#. That just about makes me swoon, such a tender yearning but troubled sound. That ends up all over my songs, along with it's minor cousin, which all the Nightshades songs seem to end with, "the Nightshades chord" aka "the Harlem Nocturne chord" aka "the mystery chord" aka "the major minor chord" aka "the Ellington chord": a minor triad with a major third, for example C Eflat G B (natural).
