Nollykin
Apologies... I havent been around for a while.. This is due to my home server / firewall box I have setup upping and dying on me. It completely kicked the electronic bucket - and I havent been able to fix it - so for now I'm back to regular dialup on my dads computer... AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HOUSE!! ARGH!! ...so hence, I dont get online that often for now. I shall return when my net box is fixed... hell knows when thatyll be... For those who are interested, I've been playing on and off. Heaps and heaps one week, barely at all the next - in all I've progressed, but I'm running out of things to start working on... I'm working on my chords, and are almost to the point where I need something else to work on... oh well... I'll just amuse myself by cranking the distortion and playing along to industrial metal or something... *mumbles and waddles off* Nolly *stops waddling* *turns around* ...Oh yeah, D-Prime - bought that guitar of yours yet? Dak Lander
Nice to hear from you Nolly. I was just thinking about you last Sunday & wondering how your playing is progressing. If you have some of those chords down, it's time to put together a few of them into a melody. Then let's hear it... Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." The Duke...

Nollykin
haha - Dakky, I've made quite a few tunes... like that song I had on before - I can play that now... and also some non distorted ones made up of the basic chords I know... but the problem is recording... it sounds SHITHOUSE...(excuse the french ) I havent got anything decent to record with - I do have a Sennheiser E-835s and my amp - but when I try to mic like that - ohhh boy.. does it sound bad! (yes.. is the answer ) It seems I need better preamps / a better sound card... well.. actually I dont know a thing about preamps... but I heard that that is an important thing... errr... what ARE preamps, anyway? A mate of mine (who is known well for his bullcrapping on and tall tales might I add) was saying how he just grabbed a 1/4" -> 1/8" converter and whacked the guitar into his computer and it worked... I told him he was full of it... but he said he downloaded some "computer amp" - like a program... I told him he was full of it... was he full of it? I dunno - I just remember when I plugged mine in nothing happened - as I expected. you need an amp to convert the signal, right? I dunno - but I thought he might be telling stories... NollyA pre-amp takes a small signal and boosts it to a certain level before eq is applied to the signal. If your friend was using the Mic input on his sound card, it is very possible that he was able to do what he told you. A computer mic is a passive(no power applied, it's just a simple transducer) device that requires a pre-amp. A sound card's mic in has a pre amp. If you have a sound card with a "line in", that does not have a pre amp, so you would need an outboard one. Line inputs on a computer sound cards are mostly made to accomodate CD/Tape player inputs, which are already pre-amped. Some sound cards have both. There are several companies that make cheap pre-amps that you could use to connect to your computer. Also, if your amp has an effects loop, or a line out, that could be fed right into the line in of your sound card. If you don't have a line in on your sound card, then you wouldn't want to put a line level signal(already pre amped) into the mic in, as the double pre amping would almost surely produce unwanted distortion. The other thing is, that the mic you are using is a fairly high output one compared to cheapo computer mics, and the mic pre in the sound card is probably not able to handle that signal, which is why your guitar sounds like do-do(there's that unwanted distortion again). If you want to record to your computer, at the very least, you need a sound card with a line in, and an outboard mic pre. You can also use a mixing board for your pre amp if you have one. Nollykin
Funny that you guys say 1/4" and 1/8". You're on the metric system, aren't you?sure are - but you guys are all yanks / yank anologues (EG canadian) so I have to make allowances hehehe No offence meant besides, everyone calls em 1/4 inch plugs... even here. noone calls em "6 1/2 mm" hehe A pre-amp takes a small signal and boosts it to a certain level before eq is applied to the signal. Strange though - that the guitar wont play if I plug it into my mic in. I do have a line in - and I am looking to get a mixing board - a small one. (teeny tiny ) Wow - you hit the nail RIGHT on the head. I was right about what I thought preamps are (the name is pretty self explanatory) - so what you say makes perfect sense... yes.. yes... (sorry - my mind is racing with realisation right now... whee). So uhh, yes. I might just get me a widdle tiny mixing board now, I might. Now. Money... come to me...
