Miking my amps?

Jedi

Recommended Posts

Whatz Up All,

I'm miking my guitar amps and I want to use a Sm57 on the grill and a C3000 Akg a little farther back. The C3000 is not really for the room, I just love the way it picks up the sound from my amps at a certain distance.

Problem: I only have one pre-amp.

Question: Which one of these mics would you put through the pre?

Thanks,

Well, the 57 is pretty much a standard. You're gonna have to try em both and decide which one suits the song. You also might check out a little Mackie mixer or something along those lines (Spirits have good reps) so you can record two mics at once.

I'm kinda in your boat. I've got one really expensive pre (for me anyway) and everything else I mix through an old Hill Multimix. Had a big Mackie but dusted off the Hill and I think it sounds better.

I've done a lot of tracks just using the line out on my Boogies. It sounds pretty good to me. You might try one line direct and then add the AKG through the pre and see how that sounds too.

Good Luck Jedi.

Well, they'll both need to go through some kinda preamp if you want to keep the noise floor down. Do you have a mixer with mic inputs sitting around? If so, use it...if not, maybe double-track the parts so you can use your mic pre for both? If you DO have a mixer channel available, I'd run whichever mic signal you tend to mix higher through the pre (assuming, of course, the pre sounds better than your mixer!). Good luck, man!

Didn't I hear some of your stuff over on the songwriting forum? If I'm rememberin' right, the guitar sounds were pretty damn good already...

Thanks guys,

Yeah, I got a little Mackie so I'll give it a try.

and yeah Rog I've got a link on the Songwriter's Forum. Thanks for the compliments. The newer stuff wasn't miked, tho. I used this mysterious little red object that looks like a kidney bean. ;)

I'm back to miking my amps and I think the new stuff will sound a whole lot better.

Thanks again,

Actually I was using the 57 for close miking until I took some advice from Lee and used a condensor...in my case an AT3528. It handles high pressures well and sounds fab, way better than the 57. And for a room mic, a CAD E100. I get a kick ass guitar sound like that. I've never ever liked the direct sound from almost anything. Moving air to me is critical.
Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in

I'll have to agree with you Geenard.

I recorded my 4x12 Cab with my C3000, and it sounded great. That's why I wasn't really using it for the room, but just a little father back to pick up the amp where I would probably hear it.

Question: I've heard a lot of talk about the moving through air thing. I haven't grasped it yet. Could you explain it to me? It's one of those things that I should have admitted my lack of understanding on that old "Music Confessions" thread.

Thanks bro,

No prob, man. I really did think it sounded good. Unlike most tube purists, I see the POD as a perfectly valid tool...especially when someone takes the time to play with it and understand it. Of course, I'd never use one for everything (or even most things) but, to me, it has its place under the "if it sounds good, use it!" rule.

:) Ya know, it SHOULD be a good year since it's been so dry all spring...the bay should be nice 'n' salty. BUT, my dad isn't seeing much yet. He's got a coupla crab pots hanging off the dock but it doesn't look too good so far.

Thanks Rog,

I have the same philosophy. If it sounds good, go with it. Unfortunately, my Delta blues sounds a little sweeter these days. I say "Unfortunate" because the Pod is a lot easier to record with.

And yeah, I had some Crabs last weekend hermanos. Crabs + Beer all day on Sunday. Got a little ill that night but it was great going down.

Oh, man, I have to make a run over the border soon(I'm about 5 minutes from the Maryland-Pa line). There's a place near Conawengo(sp?) that's supposed to have great prices on bushels of live ones. There's another place in Elkton that has an all you can eat crab night, but it's expensive($21!), and they're all tiny little males. Not a she-crab in the lot!
I really don't know what to put here.

Way south of me.
