Django Reinhardt

Does anyone know if Django Reinhardt made any recordings before his hand injury ?

I know that his recordings with the "hot quintet" began in 1934 & that his hand injury occurred in 1928. Recently I've read about what were described as "his earliest recordings" with a trio including a pennywhistle & accordion, which are supposed to be quite different (un-jazzy) in style but this source lacked any dates.

I know this is a rather esoteric bit of info but, hey, that's what the information highways about, right ?

as far as i know, django appeared on no recordings before the fire in '28.

i'm guessing you've got the 10-cd set like me, and it starts at '36. all of my django books are down in the basement (my "django freak" period was 7 or 8 years ago), but i don't remember hearing about any existing recordings before 1936. djangology quotes pianist michel emer remembering a recording session on march 14, 1933, but i don't think it exists today. at least i never found it.

i scoured every record store in paris, and i saw a million compilation records. nearly all of them were the quintet. if there were early recordings, someone between the 40s and today would have put them out (i hope).

while i'm hoping, i hope someone proves me wrong.

Thanks, Wager, actually I don't have the compilation you mentioned; does it have any of the pennywhistle/accordion trio, or any of (what I've read described as) DR's distinctly un-jazzy pre-quintet work ?

Thanks, again.

djangology is a 10-cd set i got awhile back

it's the first set reviewed here.

i had my "django freak" period before i owned a computer and got online. needless to say, there are a million django sites out there.

i just typed "djangology" into google to find a review for you and the first result was this. "Djangology Volume 1: 1934 -1935 details the front end of the guitarist's association with Stephane Grappelli. These pieces were originally released on Ultraphon and Decca between December 1934 and October 1935." well, that's before anything on the "djangology" set i've got. i've got a biography that has a pretty good discography in the back, and i don't remember hearing about it. my django memory is fading, i'll try to dig up my books and get back to you.

Thanks evn more, W, but don't make this your life's work !

I like what I've heard of "Djazzy Django" but I was really wodering how his playing might've sounded with four fingers....(you know, would he make different chord selections/voicings, etc.).
