Now playing...

Mason Williams, "Classical Gas" on Oldies 95 here in KC.

Oldies 95 is doing something for Memorial Day Weekend, where they're not playing the same 20 oldies they usually play.

Cool. I love that song. I remember seeing him play it on TV with an acrylic acoustic guitar with goldfish swimming in it...back in the day.

I saw the goldfish-in-the-guitar performance on TV too. I used to play a pared down version of that song, and just to-day while playing at a restaurant during Sunday Brunch I was asked if I could play it. I had to say no because it's been so long, pardon me while I shut this thing off and go work on it again.

Ted, are you trying to tell me that there are more than 20 songs in each genre.

Next thing you know, you will try to convince us that the tooth fairy is not real.

Nice try. But I'm not buyin' it! ;)

I said to my mom recently that, growing up believing in the tooth fairy and then finding out about the dentist, is like finding out that Santa Claus actually takes things from your house.

Glen Campbell is a frightening guitarist to say the least. I've always wanted to see some of the old timers, Campbell, Jerry Reed, and Roy Clark open up a can of whupass on some strings... :D

Hi Tedster and every buddy;

This morning I learned "The Guitar Man" by Bread. Don't ask me how I chose it, I just wanted to do something different that was really bitchin'. The interplay of the pedal steel and wah-wahed lead guitar over fairly basic acoustic guitar chords is just exquisite. Not a super challenging piece, of course, but it just reminded me of some of the tunes you've talked about on this thread, and your interest in "where songs come from". Sometimes it's just great fun to learn a song 'cuz you like it, no matter if it's "your style" of "your genre" or "your era" or any other consideration. KnowhatImean? Out.

[bRAG] I can play it. :D [/bRAG]

Or at least, I used to. Haven't played it in awhile so who knows what I'd sound like now. But when I was learning to play it was one of my favorites, and since I didn't have an electric guitar for a couple of years and had nothing better to do, I decided to challenge myself with finger-bleeding acoustic stuff. So I learned stuff like that, and "Last Steam Engine Train" by John Fahey (although I copped it from Leo Kottke's version).

Yeah, I was a sick puppy when I was a kid... Come to think of it, that's probably why by the time I got an electric guitar, I had no interest in becoming a "shredder". :D

 Man, I need to reply to a lot of people.

Couldn't use the quotes. Too many!

First, have a friend who's classically trained and ripped that tune out no sweat. Said there was no challenge there for HIM! Cocksucker!

Second, there ARE more than twenty songs in EVERY genre, but some radio stations haven't caught on! One "classic rock" station in the Detroit area here would have you believe the only tune Guess Who ever did was "No Sugar Tonight"!

Classic rock! MY ASS!

Third, Glen Campbell and Roy Clark can put the whoop-ass on a LOT of the oh-so-cool guitar players we old hippies and some of you X-men like to think are great! WHAT they play don't matter in light of HOW they play it!

Lastly, "Classical Gas" is probably the simplest piece of music I've heard Mason Williams play. If you find any of his recordings, you'll find he's far more accomplished than that tune ever led you to believe. Still like it, though!

I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Yup, Whitefang...we were giving shit to said radio stations.

I've got to delve into more Mason Williams. Great stuff.

Lee, you piss me off. :D But, you're into Fahey too? I copped a version of his standard "In Christ There Is No East Nor West"...a great ol' fingerpickin' thing, only, I play it with a standard clawhammer and he uses something that makes his guitar sound more like a banjo. Got to listen to it more, perhaps I'll finally figure it out.

Long live the late great Blind Joe Death.
