SF audio
I've got a fender strat going into a 65' bandmaster head. I put in the Dimarzio vintage blues pickups, which adds some beef over stock single coils. I get a lot of bite and pic dynamics. I throw a TS9 with the 808 mod in the path, and it kills the dynamics too much. Bite disappears. Not that it's a bad thing, but I'm looking for a booster/OD pedal that adds clean gain/sustain without getting too dirty. Let me know what to look at.....thanks. Sylver
The VooDoo Labs Sparkle drive is way cool and sounds like it's what you are looking for. I have one and it's the bomb. If I ran a stereo rig I'd probably check out the Carl Martin Hot Drive and boost. It's sounds similar, but you can run clean to one amp, and boosted or overdriven to the other. Never heard one, though. I really don't know what to put here.
Rick Huff
If you can, try out a "Hot Cake". I use it the most with a Komet. Also, though I haven't tried one yet, the Menatone "Top Boost in a Can" is really being well received.
Skip_dup1
Grab a copy of the June GP magazine, they have a distortion/OD shootout.
Wickerman
Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive or Banzai Cold Fusion depending on your price cap. If you have the cash, check out The Banzai Cold Fusion on Musictoys.com A buddy of mine got one and it's the most fantastic sounding pedal I've ever heard. I normally only like real overdriven tubes but the Cold Fusion rocks my socks off!
SF audio
Thanks for all the replies. Looks like the sparkle drive is the one to try, given it's reasonable price. "I know we've been under a lot of stress, but if you gentlemen don't mind, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS F***ING COUCH!" What film is this from? John Carpenter's "The Thing" remake in 1982ish. Right after one of the monsters is discovered and wrecks some havoc...... Meriphew_dup1
Try using either a ZVEX SHO, ZVEX Super Duper, or a VHT Valvulator line buffer. Put one of these first in line and you should see a nice improvement. _____________________ Post indie electronic Meriphew www.meriphew.com www.meriphew.com
Skip_dup1
got the VHT box myself-it`s really nice but not an OD per se.
Meriphew_dup1
Skip - true, it isn't an OD pedal, but, they are both signal boosters, which will in a lot of cases improve your signal/sound dramaticly. www.meriphew.com
Skip_dup1
no doubt there. From what I`ve seen so far, the best pedals are the most transparent as far as clean gain but some of them get into some good dollars, like the KLON Centaur or the Soldano. There`s two excellent sites I`d recommend. www.pedalman.com-rare and vintage pedals, and www.custom-sounds.com-great hard-to-find stuff and worldwide shipping. The Bear Jew
Yo.. A buddy of mine just got a Z.Vex SHO, and I heard what it can do firsthand. Yikes. It's scary what this thing does to a guitar sound. It makes his old Fender tweed open up like nothing else I've heard. We used to think his regular lead channel was kind of extreme-sounding... this thing really makes it sing. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
Dylan
Check out the Visual Sound Route 66 and Jekyl & Hyde pedals. I play the J&H and the overdrive section is very tasty! Check out www.visualsound.net for more details.
