SoundWrangler
Speaking of Stones tunes, Street Fighting Man is in standard open D. That famous 1st chord is a barre chord straight across the 10th (!) fret. (Start there, you'll figure out the rest.) "Can't play any Stones tune right until you first figure out what tuning Keith is in (& what capo position). ...he does occasionally play std. tuning, though - just to keep us on our toes! And why hasn't there ever been a resurgence of interest in Johnny Winter, anyway (both as a great slider player & guitarist in general)? Even when Stevie Ray was the rage, most discussion was about Hendrix influence, when anyone can hear that he at least drank from the same cup as Johnny W. Tedly Nightshade
Johnny Winter and Hendrix go at it on "Woke Up This Morning and Found Myself Dead", a bizarre bootleg of a late night club jam. Rhythm section is that of Johnny Winter And, with an appearance from Buddy Miles, I think. I like the version of "Tomorrow Never Knows"! Ry Cooder is nuts about dragging a heavy slide all up and down the frets and making an unholy racket. Didn't Duane play mostly in standard guitar tuning? Ted A WOP BOP A LU BOP, A LOP BAM BOOM! SoundWrangler
Yeah, Duane played in std. tuning. So did George H., as I recall. Sounds to me like David Gilmour (who also has done very competent non blues-derived slide work) plays slide in both std. & open tunings.
lrbreez
No, Duane played in E tuning. He played standard tuning on "Dreams" and "Mountain Jam". Everything else with the Allman Brothers was E tuning. Buddy
Tedly Nightshade
So does he keep switching guitars on all that live stuff, or does he play without a slide in E tuning all night? Hard to believe, all those licks fall perfectly under the hands in standard, and the various Duane-chair hired guns since, like Warren Haynes, were certainly playing in standard, as is Dicky Betts. No confusion, I seen it with my own two eyes (not Duane though... ) Ted A WOP BOP A LU BOP, A LOP BAM BOOM! "There is nothing I regret so much as my good behavior. Cadillac_Jack
lrbreez is right about Duane, he swapped his SG for his Les Paul for non-slide songs except those two. But like you say Ted, it's easy enough to do 95% of his stuff in standard tuning, Warren definitely proved that. I had to learn a couple in E tuning until I figured out where he was coming from, now standard tuning is no prob for A-Bros songs.
