Does anyone know for sure ...

There were two guitarists on Steely Dan's Debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill, Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias. Who plays the lead part of "Reeling in the Years"? It sounds like one of the guitars is taking the rhythm and one the lead, but I suppose they could be trading off if the styles are similar enough. Anyone know?

I really don't know what to put here.

Steely Dan themselves have always been pretty vague as far as track-by-track credits go. I'm pretty sure I read an interview by Elliot Randall himself years ago talking about it. I'll see what I can dig up. Thanks for giving me something to do at work today. ;)

The lead was played by Elliott Randall. And the lesser-known fact is that Rick Derringer played the rhythm guitar part. Strange, but true.

Yes, you get to sit through "Escape from LA" 12 times in a row.

Man, this has bugged me forever. I've heard in bunches of different places that it was the Skunk, seen him interviewed with that solo in the background, read an interview with a producer who said he used him all the time because of that solo.

Where did you guys get your info?

Actually, I heard it from Skunk's own mouth that Elliott Randall was the lead on "Reeling In The Years." (Someone asked him about the song at a clinic I mixed.)

I also have a really old guitar mag with an Elliott Randall interview in which he's credited with the solo and describes the session in detail. I think it's in a mid-1980's Guitar Player magazine.

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman
