Why soytnly, Moe...nyuk nyuk nyuk...

What riffs are you looking for specifically?

Please, stay away from "Enter Sandman"...the music store clerks association will be forever grateful.

However, Metallica does have tons of cool riffs. Go to a site like www.tabcrawler.com and pick some up. But learn some old Zeppelin (and other classic rock bands) riffs, too.

Whatever your style of music, especially if you want to be a rock player, don't limit yourself to learning 2 note power chords (especially drop D stuff). Get a fundamental understanding of open chords, then full barre chords, Major, minor, dominant 7th (just called 7th chords), Major and minor 7th, 9th etc. At least those...

Once you've learned those, you'll be able to move on. It's nice to learn a few riffs early on, too...but learn those chords!!!

There's a couple of good threads around here to point you in the proper direction. I'll try to find it...

For the same reason as if you'd been around in 1971, "Smoke on the Water" was taboo...or '72..."Stairway to Heaven".

Every new guitar player learned these things, and thought they'd go into the music store and "impress" the salespeople with their prowess by playing out-of-tune renditions of these songs over and over and over and over at ear splitting volume.

Remember the movie "Wayne's World" where the sign says "NO STAIRWAY". That's why. The "Enter Sandman" riff is the "Smoke on the Water" of this generation. Music store workers get sick of hearing it over and over and over...

If I'm feeling antsy, I'll open tune something off the wall, and rip out some "Pony Boy", something they never hear. Usually gets replies like "How long you been playing blues?". Which always makes me grin. :)

More often than not, I go to the acoustic room and play all the 5K buck guitars. Salespersons are all over me, and you can usually make em shut up by just ripping some bluegrass and totally ignoring them. Does that make me bad, or just arrogant? :)

More often than not, guitar store salespeople need their chops busted, so to speak. A lesson or two in humility. Think of it more like...justice.

Especially the ones at Mars Music in Birmingham.

I've always loved Birmingham, of course I don't live there. Just like all the tall bluffs, reminds me of Natchez or Vicksburg.

Shit, I didn't know there was a Mars in B-ham. Thats just a quick run down the road for me. I may have to drop in there and run through their geetars.

Hey, do a search for "riffs" or "guitar licks" on any decent search engine and you'll find several sites with examples of decent riffs.

Mars has it's uses...large and varied selection has its advantages. Consistent, catalog pricing can be good or bad.

If you're headed this way and actually want good service and somewhat negotiable prices, stop by Bailey Brothers Music downtown.

As always, it pays to shop around, but BB is the better store to develop a relationship with.
