theebogdon
I been debating my roommate about this subject and I need a fresh perspective. While listening to the new Pat Metheny Group CD "Speaking of Now", I wondered if anyone besides me would consider them to be a jam band? In the vein of Phish or Leftover Salmon. Perhaps not in the "traditional" sense but they could play bills with these guys right? been talking on other boards with people who say that PMG is improv and not really "jamming"...but I'm not much of a musician so I dunno if I'm just being naive... I like it all , maybe that's my problem... thanks http://www2.fanscape.com/patmethenygroup/bannerredirect.asp
Steevo
I would agree that PMG is improv and not jamming. I used to jam as an 18 yr old know nothing ... Metheny works with a musical understanding that is beyond most of our comprehension. He ain't jammin'...
Gabriel E.
Improvising over difficult chord changes is "improv" (aka Jazz). Improvising for bars and bars over a static key center is "jamming". whitefang
Some would say jammin' IS improv! I've always understood that if the whole tune is made up on the spot, it's jamming. If the chart is set and the solos aren't, it's improv. And not all solos have been improvised. This is especially true of Raymond Scott, who wrote, note for note, some of the most incredible solos you could hear! Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
