mikey_dup1
Does anyone know what SRV used for effects, if any? Someone told me a Ibanez tube screamer but I doubt it.
Virtual Jim
http://www.guitargeek.com/layouts/display.php3?id=310 I don't know how accurate this is, so don't shoot me if it's not...
Wickerman
No, Jim it's not too true. Mostly he just used an Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-808 and his amps. He wasn't too effects heavy. He also had an octave-fuzz and wah but you don't hear them too much.
eh steve
he also used ultra heavy strings and overwound pickups. http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail36.html
Dak Lander
I can only say this. I watched a SRV special some months ago & there was only one pedal of any type on the floor anywhere around him. The really amazing thing that occured during that gig was while playing, he broke a string. The guitar tech was so quick & right on with everything you could hardly hear a problem. The guy brought out the white strat while SRV was un hooking, held the white strat in front of Stevie & hooked him up & took the normal axe away. Absolutely the smoothest change out I've ever seen. Sylver
From my research, here is what seems to be the case with SRV equipment: He changes it every few years. He started out more simply with with just a TS-808 between him and the amp(s). He is signiture sound was his signal split between and amp with a ts-808 driving it, and a sparkly clean amp. As he gained popularity and noteriety for the Hendrix connection (something he actually downplayed early on, then, accepted and took advantage of later)he started adding some more effects. The Wah, for Voodoo Chile(Slight Return), then the taped Wahs, one up one down, which can be heard on Come On, The Fuzz Face and Univibe for Third Stone from the Sun, and The Uni Vibe on several versions of Little Wing (not all, on some of the versions he seemed to use just the rotating speaker). From what I can tell(and this is my own opinion, I've been listening to HUGE amounts of SRV recently) He seemed to only use the ts-808 (and sometimes the Vibro Tone) on most of the non-Hendrix stuff. A few songs he used the wah on. He pulled out the Uni Vibe, the Fuzz Face, The taped Wahs and the Octavia(I guess. If he used it, I'm not sure what song. Please let me know if you know, because I haven't detected one on any of the songs I've heard) for the Hendrix stuff. What was the question? I really don't know what to put here. jef5f
The only thing I've ever heard that he used besides a guitar at cord and an amp is an old Ibanez Tube Screamer. Psalm 33:3 The best instrument you have, is your heart.
Wickerman
You can hardly tell most of the times he uses his wah. Listen to Cold Shot. If you're paying attention to the beginning you can hear it but it's not really obvious.

Dak Lander
Rif, I'm not a left turn fan but I can say that the guitar tech was so quick & smooth it was astounding, so in comparison, it would be like a 5 second pit stop. SRV just compensated like it was an everday occurance. Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." The Duke... fantasticsound
Originally posted by daklander: ...SRV just compensated like it was an everday occurance. It probably was. A good guitar tech will either work the way you described or, depending on the act, may throw the guitars from offstage as someone else is catching the broken one! I wouldn't want to have to catch a guitar on a regular basis. That's just trouble in the making. But I've seen it done... It's easiest to find me on Facebook. jaccursi
That guitar change is on the DVD that comes with the SRV boxed set, very impressive, as is the entire set. The cds are great too. Lots of early unrealesed stuff and all the favorites. Buy my Strat!
