pauldil
I've got a '78 Ibanez George Benson GB10 that I've always kept in it's flight case. I hadn't played it for a couple of years and took it out one day to find that the strings, pickup covers, and other metal parts had a green, bubbly ooze growing on them. I assumed it was moisture, but someone just told me that it has something to do with the plastic Ibanez used for the pickguard emmiting some sort of vapor that corrodes metal. Does anyone know if this is true?
Mark Worley
Hi, I've had EXACTLY the same problem. My old GB10 was left in its case for a couple of years and when I took it out all metal parts had corroded and the pickguard itself had an oozy liquid on it. All gold plated parts had corroded green and the strings were actually incredibly rusted. I was very disappointed. I had to replace the pickups (expensive) and now I have to find a replacement pickguard. Have you had any luck finding a solution to this? Thanks, Mark
Caevan O’Shite
Welcome to the GPF, Mark Worley! Wow, an ancient thread bumped from the morgue! I remember this; fortunately for pauldil, this had a happy ending- albeit at some expense, but a happy ending nonetheless. Perhaps we can help you, as well. Maybe you or I might even PM pauldil about this, he hasn't been here much in a few years... Here's another very old thread started by pauldil that followed up all that (note that there are two 'pages); unfortunately, the links to the before-and-after pics and a clip that pauldil recorded on his beautiful, freshly restored GB10 have gone waaay stale and there's nothing to see or hear now, but the thread's there to read. FWIW, pauldil's small avatar-image pic is an "after" photo shot after the guitar's full restoration. Danzilla
Interesting. One of my best friends used to play an Ibanez version of a Les Paul Custom back in the late 70's/early 80's. Then he stopped playing it and went totally acoustic. Around 89, he was going to play it, but it was all messed up. I got his girlfirend to sneak it out to me to fix it up for a Christmas present for him. Pretty much all of the gold-plated hardware was horribly corroded - pickup covers, bridge, tailpiece - nasty. The tuners weren't too bad, and just took a little polishing. I replaced the hardware and it played wonderfully. I'll have to check and see if it's holding up, or if sitting in it's case with the pickguard caused more rotting. For the record, I don't recall the pickguard having any green goop on it, but it has been a while. Caevan O’Shite
I don't recall the pickguard having any green goop on it, but it has been a while. FWIW, on the ones I've seen in person- as well as in photos- the green crusty crud was on the corroded hardware; the plastic/celluloid/whatever parts just looked wrinkly, bumpy and pitted. TeddyB
I also purchased an Ibanez GB10 in 1978. The guitar is in excellent shape except for the same corrosion problems that I have read about on this and other sites. The electronics have also deteriorated to the point where it is unplayable through an amp. I just ordered the pick guard from Drums, Etc. I was hoping for an update about this problem and any resolutions that members may have found.

TeddyB
Thanks Larryz. I have been all over the internet looking for solutions. I ordered the pick guard assembly from Drums, Etc. Most of the parts are available from their site. I also contacted Ibanez directly today. They will check to see if their parts will work with my 1978 model. The earliest model year shown on their parts list is 2000. It appears to me that not much has changed. Parts can be purchased directly from Ibanez, but at full retail. Drums, Etc's offerings are discounted at about 10%.
Larryz
Hey check out the thread "Guitar Day" as there are a couple Ibby players that may be able to help you TeddyB... Take care, Larryz
Caevan O’Shite
Sorry to hear about that, TeddyB... As far as I know, the only solution is, hopefully, to spot it as early as possible, and to replace and repair afflicted components. If you leave the guitar out on a stand to 'air-out' while the problem is still developing, it may be better than leaving it in a case, where the gasses emitted by the decaying pickguards and binding are held within the case. No cure, but it may slow things down and reduce the damage somewhat.
