Amp test on Thursday!!

The protoype electroCoustic amp will be getting the big audition on Thursday evening. My partner says it's ready to go. He put a scope on it last night and claims a whopping 9 watts before clipping!! I'm really pumped...I'd talked to a dozen botique designers over the last couple of years, amps usually based on push pull 6L6 or EL34 tubes...

Well, this one is pure class A, using the 300B...Brett says it sounds great; we still need to find the correct speaker cab combo for it, but I think we have the basics...a JBL E130 that'll do 105dB, one watt, one meter...that should equate to 114dB before the onset of clip.

I'll report in on Friday with the update.

I'm holding my breath Dave, I'll still be wanting one of them. I just have to sell my kids to get one at this point. Well, I guess I'll sell other stuff too...

Auditioned the new electroCoustic amp for the first time Thursday night. This is the engineering prototype, and the first iteration of the design.

Based on the Western Electric 300B triode power tube, we are searching for an amp design that will not only complement my guitars, but any acoustic guitar.

So, what we have is a pure class A, single ended amplifier of a measured 9.6 watts output. CLEAN output with negligible distortion. I wasn't really sure what to expect, it could have sounded like a souped up Champ......

I was amazed at how good it sounded with my guitars. Absolutely no trace of piezo harshness...in fact, I couldn't even tell there was a piezo in the circuit! The rig didn't sound like an electric guitar, or acoustic guitar...it just sounded like a guitar. Rich, and especially dynamic.

We used a very efficient JBL speaker system. Started with an E130(that's JBL's premium 15" guitar cone)...plenty loud enough to keep up with a horn section...still wasn't quite enough "acoustic" to the sound though...so we added a JBL EON1500 two way speaker....and everything was there. Enough volume for an acoustic group, or a jazz ensemble. AND, no compression, no harshness, all of the harmonic richness and dynamic range...it was everything the hifi aficionados say a 300B amp is supposed to be. 3 dimensional.

There are a few glitches...a minor buzz when the guitars are turned down, and we will probably add another preamp stage; there is a slight impedance mismatch between the driver stage and the power tube. Our output tranny is WAY too big...we'll be going to a smaller one of those. AND, we'll be adding a tube buffered, parallel EFX loop...just in case one wants to add reverb(does anyone know where I can get an old plate reverb?).

We still have much to do regarding the speaker cab. I was hoping we wouldn't need more than the E130...but we'll need to add a tweeter or horn on top of that.

All in all, a very successful first attempt at an amp. My hat's off to my partner Brett for building this one.....
