Okay... What now? ("I'm a beginner!" Part 2 =) )

Nollykin

Recommended Posts

Right. I used Tedsters advice to Mona, and I am fairly proficient at the following chords.

Em, Am, C, Fmaj7, D7, G

I can do the "doo wop" progression teddy said about, and am getting much better at it every day.

So now I ask you, all you guitar gurus, What now? What should I learn, now that I have these basic chords open? What is phase two in your suggested learning programme?

I dont know how to do scales yet... should I learn these?

And, the toughest...a full F...

Note that on a full F (not Maj7) the first finger bars (barres) the E and B string at the first fret. So this finger has to have a "reverse curve" at the first knuckle, while the others maintain their normal curve. It's tricky for beginners.

Now...when you're done with that...put the chords into I-IV-V-I cadences (the 1 4 5 thing refers to where they'd fall in a major scale...don't worry about it yet...you'll pick it up).

I IV V I

1. G C D G

2. D G A D

3. A D E A

4. E A B7 E

5. C F G C

6. Em Am B7 Em

Practice those cadences trying to change chords as cleanly and rapidly as possible. Start slow... work up to speed.

Nolly,

What songs are you learning? Just practicing chords and scales gets boring fast. And although you still have to do them, religiously, you should be playing songs. This is, after all, why you're playing.

So let's get you started on some songs.

Turbo's right...

Now that you know all of these chords...let's put 'em in order.

Hopefully, as you practice these chords, you're already hearing "Oh, that sounds like this song" when you play a particular chord sequence. That's GREAT...that's what we want!

Let's do a simple one..."All For You" by Sister Hazel. It was a moderate hit here in the U.S. a couple years back...

The chord sequence is as follows...

I'm using / for a bar...and :|| for repeat

Am..2..3..4../D..2..3..4../Am..2..3..4../D..2..3..4:||

{just meaning to play Am for one full measure and then D for another measure, twice thru and repeat)

Em..2..3..4../C..2..3..4../Em..2..3..4../C..2..3..4/

Em..2..3..4../C..2..3..4../D..2..3..4../D..2..3..4/

Then some quicker changes...

G..2..C..4/Am..2..D..4..

So during the chorus

"It's hard to say what it is I see in you

Wonder if I'll always be with you"

you're changing chords every 1/2 measure, or 2 beats. That's relatively fast for a beginner. And, to add to it, the changes are anticipated, in other words the changes come on the "and" of the preceding beat (upstroke). But don't worry about that for now...just concentrate on making your changes.

Now...playing that chorus bit...G-C-Am-D...you may also start to sing to yourself

"Once upon a midnight dreary

I woke with something in my head"...

Yup, same chord progression to "Runaround" by Blues Traveler.

As you start strumming, use quarter note downstrokes to begin with. Yup, it sounds awkward...then add the eighth note upstroke as you feel more comfy

1&2&3&4&

So 1,2,3,4 are downstrokes...and the "&'s" are upstrokes.

Build off some of the open chords you've learned to now learn moveable versions of these chords (aka Barre Chords). For Example, the open E major chord is used as the building block for the moveable Barre chord with the Chord Root on the 6th string - Example, you barre the first fret with your first finger and play the same other string fingering as the Open E but one fret higher to give you an F Major chord.

You can do the same with the Open A to play other moveable versions, in this case with the Chord Root location on the 5th string, which is played as an open A for the A major chord.

Get a basic chord book and you will find many forms of moveable chords both in major, minor, sevenths, 6ths, 9ths, 13ths, etc.

If you can arrange it I think its never to early to start working on timing and rhythm. I think in another post you mentioned ACID. I'd get anything that keeps a decent beat and practice your chord changes with it. I think metronomes are a little tedious, but any 4/4 drum pattern will work.

Even better if you can find a mate to play along with. Maybe another guitar playing bud, or ..... a drummer.

I'll put in my little pitch for guitar lessons here as well. Most people can make faster progess with a little coaching. Give it a thought.

Above all have fun.

Here's some more easy songs with the chords already covered:

"Good" by Better Than Ezra

G / / / | D / / / | Em / / / | C / / / |

If you're not familiar with the notation above, it means you strum the G chord on the first beat and repeat the same chord on beats 2, 3 and 4. The strum the D chord on the first beat and repeat the same chord on beats 2, 3 and 4. And so on. Keep repeat the whole thing until the songs ends. NOTE: In the guitar solo, it transposes up a whole note, to A-E-F#m-D, then back to the original key. Basically, the guitar solo has different chords but it goes back to the progression above after the solo.

"Low" by Cracker

D / / / | C / / / | Em / / / | G / / / |

This chord progression repeat throughout the whole song.

Enjoy!

EEp... F is farging hard. I have tiny fingers so its difficult to barre that chord. it wouldnt be useful to use the ist and second fingers for the first two strings, then the 3rd finger for the 3rd string, and the pinky for the 4th... Not gonna work?

Ahh... I guess I just better practice :)

ayaiyai.

Also.. the B7 just doesnt sound right. I dont know if I'm doing it right. could someone explain how it goes...

1st string 2nd fret

2nd string open

3rd string 2nd fret

4th string 1st fret

5th string 2nd fret

6th muted / not played

thats right eh? does a b7 just sound.. funny? it sounds wrong, thats all. :)

I have trouble with my pinky on the top string. Realtrouble. it just doesnt wanna work. actually, come to think of it, I have trouble with my pinky. Period. All the time...

Any suggestions? when I hold a note with my pinky, because its so small, if it is out a fraction the string plays flat. it cuts short, with a little *twang*. which kinda sucks. I have to manuver it perfectly, or else it doesnt work. How the hell did elton john do it...

Go get a starter music theory book. Then, go get an advanced music theory book. Once you understand theory, playing and writing will come SO much easier. You'll just know exactly how something should be done and know how different chords and inversions will compliment each other. It'll really help you improve.

I should - yes. But I'm... slow. I'm still learning to play :) though I should do lots at once. I have this, singing, school, etc. :) But I guess.. it cant hurt.

Nolly - keep trying with the B7. You'll be glad you did. If you get used to using your pinky early-on, it'll be second nature after a while. Plus, B7 is one of those chord shapes that you can move up'n'down the guitar neck and impress your friends! So, you'll get some mileage out of B7 when you get it down!

Also, it might sound wrong by itself, but just put in an E-A-B7 sequence and you'll sound just like Elton... er, I mean Eric Clapton! :D

Nollykin,

For the F barre chord, try wrapping your thumb around so it's fretting the 6th string at the first fret. Basically, you barre the 1st and 2nd string with your index finger, middle finger is on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string, ring finger is on the 3rd fret of the 5th string, pinky is on the 3rd fret of the 4th string and your thumb is wrapped around the neck on the 1st fret of the 6th string.

OK, some people will think this is cheating and wrong but it was good enough for Hendrix. You can also use it as a stepping stone to doing it the "proper" way.

A lot of old timers use the "thumb wraparound" method for barre chords.

Nollster...just take it slowly. You're not in a race or anything...just be patient and it'll come. I personally think a good chord vocabulary is the most important thing in guitar playing. Nice to be Steve Vai...but without a solid chord foundation it'd be just a lot of seemingly random notes. Well, you know what I mean. No foundation, no music. You're getting there. Better to take it slowly and get it right than rush and cut corners and be sloppy.

I will, master. My journey is long, but my feet are strong.

*donk*

I dont really like to do lead because A) I never really tried it, B) I cant really do anything with my pinky the way it is, C) I dont see the advantage in learning it. Rythm is good enough for me. :P

But I probably should learn it at some stage. but like you said - foundations.
