Best Tele Pickup Replacement?

Dylan

Recommended Posts

I'm using a Japanese 90's Custom Tele that needs upgraded pickups. Any recommendations? I'm thinking about getting the Texas Specials for Tele set but would be interested in hearing of others. I know of the Joe Bardens, but I'm not a real country player, plus, I'm not crazy with how they look. Still, if these are the only pickups worth getting I am not opposed. I still want it to sound and look like a Tele, but with more output and less noise. Thanks in advance!

There's a lot of variety with pickups so it would help you to know what kind of sound you're looking for. I personally have a Seymour Duncan Broadcaster which I love. It has a hot twangy sound that I find useful for Rock and R&B or Funky stuff. I am a big Jeff Beck fan and I originally got the Duncan because I know that he did a lot of pickup work for Beck. I thought it would give me that JB sound and I haven't been dissapointed.

Hmmmm....I have a JB humbucker in my Epiphone LP. I had thought about putting in the smaller version, but I'm not looking for a humbucker sound in my Tele. I'll have to check out the Broadcaster. Thanks!

Kinmans are supposed to be really nice. I've heard good things about them. I have a Lace Player's Choice neck pickup in my tele. http://www.agi-lace.com It is quite hot and dark but complements the stock bridge pickup nicely.

I've noticed at least two kinds of teles - those that really twang, and those that really rock. Mine is the rocking variety; it weighs a ton and has the early Led Zep guitar tones in spades. It is also a bit dark sounding. I've heard a lot of different teles that all sounded quite unique depending on the woods, electronics, etc. You may be in for a bit of trial and error until you find the ones that really do it for you.
