HAMMER & PULL CONT.

When pulling off the string (the pull off), do you flick up towards 6th string (like i have been doing) or flick down towards the 1st string?

I find it more comfortable to flick up ...

Is there a right and wrong way to do the pull off?

:( THANKS IN ADVANCE

@rc, not sure what your question is here.

When pulling off a string, any string, you typically pull off a bit downward, towards the high E string. When you pull off, you're almost "picking" the string with the finger that had been fretting.

You can pull off on any string. The E and A strings are much easier as it takes very little to get them vibrating. You can actually just lift your finger off the string and it will chime.

Because we said so, young man. And don't take that tone with us or you won't get any cookies and milk for a bedtime snack.

All joking aside, I've never heard of anyone "pushing off" the string. Ultimately, everyone has their own style...so in the grand scheme of things, I can't say that what you're doing is wrong. It just seems awkward.

I would say that it is more natural for the finger to contract than extend...which is why one pulls downward rather than pushes upward.

A stronger, more articulate note results from pulling the string down before releasing it. I suppose with practice one could achieve the same results by pushing up and "flicking" the string with the fingertip, but that goes against the natural motion of the hand and fingers.

Neither is really an issue on electric, but on acoustic and classical guitar, a forceful pulloff is a necessity.
