Wickerman
... Hmmm. There are a couple. I always look for new or used gear in the $400-$700 range. I don't think I'll ever spend over $1500 on any guitar. I don't think it's worth it. Possibly a new Gretsch for $1800. MAYBE. But primarily, I get gear that's fairly cheap. I'm not sure on my favorite but here's a list of some of my "good deal" list... gtrmac
I'm shopping for a Fender Japan Strat or Tele. I missed out an a really nice Tele for $300 so now it's hard to find one since the one I was too slow on was very sweet. It had some beautiful flame in the neck so now I compare every one I see to that one and I can't get excited about them. One'll turn up eventually. Mac Bowne G-Clef Acoustics Ltd. Mr. Downchild
If you're a Fender man, then get a Japanese reissue if you can find one. They WILL require some tweaking, but you'll still end up with a tone machine that'll set you back about $700 to $800 total. www.tonequest.com has a cool article about setting up/modding a MIJ/MIM Fender for a nominal amount of cash. Also a well kept secret is the Jimmie Vaughan strat. It's a MIM strat, but the ones I came across were consistently well made. JV himself used to buy the MIJ strats and fix them up. A lot of those mods come standard in the JV sig (i.e. big frets, better pots and capacitors, hotter pups, etc) The cool thing is you can get one for relatively cheap, and then set it up to suit your taste/needs. Hope this helps.
Sylver
I'd love to have a cheapo Dano, just to pull out occasionally. No, really. I really don't know what to put here.
not coaster MODERATOR
I would start with a Strat that is decent-one not made from particle board. Then, as time and money allow, begin to upgrade things on it. Lockers, P'ups, mid-boost can all be added later. Meanwhile, you still have a pretty good guitar that can be used. Note on the DaneElectro, there is no truss adjustment on some (all??) of their models. Be sure to check before you buy.
Nollykin
Okay - seriously, Cheap, that means CHEAP... meaning unless you look at Squiers or lower grade epiphones, Gibson and Fender are wayyyyyy out of the question.. unless you go for overseas models. In which case, I'd go for something from the S / SA / SC series from Ibanez, like my guitar, the SA60, or the S(40 I think) or something from the pacifica range like the PAC112 or PAC012. Yamaha and Ibanez are the ones that jump out in my mind. Mr. Downchild
Good point, Nollykin. American made Fenders are pricey here in the U.S. I would imagine they're outrageously expensive over where you are. There's a definite difference between cheap and inexpensive. If we're going CHEAP, then a guitar made of laminated plywood with a four piece neck would probably qualify.

If you want a very useful & highly playable instrument real cheap, a Dano DC-3 is a top contender. Hey, it doesn't cost much more than a great stomp-box or a practice amp. /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later! That sort of changes my opininion on the Dano. Because I liked everything else about it. I would buy one as a third or fourth guitar just to have around.
