What a mess!!!

I just got done rewiring and replacing the volume pot in an old (Korean made?) Hamer Slammer. What a bloody mess!!! About half the wires were exposed, two wires had come undone and the volume pot had died. Not to mention it was the sloppiest solder job I've ever seen. I rewired everything from the input jack to the last volume pot. The 5-way was clean enough so I left it alone. When it broke, my best friend called me and had me take a look at it, I resoldered two wires but it still didn't work so I brought it home and tested it with my pop's oscilloscope and found that the volume pot was dead so I replaced that, redid some wiring and tried it out. It sounds better than ever. It buzzes about 10x less. I can't wait until my buddy hears it. He owes me big now! :D I was just bored and frustrated about doing all that instead of just replacing the one pot but it seems to have been worth it. Anyway, thanks for wasting some time reading my post. Anyone else have stories about having to repair crappy electronics work in guitars?

I generally don't have the patience...plus, my eyesight requires bifocals...so, I really don't like to do a lot of precision soldering on tiny little wires. I'll leave that to the young guys with skinny nimble fingers and good eyesight.

Teddy, if those old eyes are the thing that's holding you back, get one of those magnifying glasses with the light around it. My dad used one of those years ago when doing his electronics stuff & the techs use them today & their eyes are one heck of a lot younger than your's. HA!

i recall working on a friend of a friends ibanez korean rg 340? anyway it looked like it spent a few years in a basement on a workbench with grease stains, impressions of bolts on the neck(really!) and years of smelly sweat. i totally cleaned it and set it up. while i was inside i decided to clean the 5 way(seeing it didn't work) well ibanez used a plastic enclosed switch which has a very small ball and spring inside to click from position to position. don't recall why i went inside the switch but the spring shot the ball out and onto my floor! would you believe i found it in less then 10 minutes. after i finished cleaning all contacts, i (nano surgeon) got that sucker back together! this guitar was abused. this doesn't compare to the time i woke up to find my 3yr old(Ben) with screwdriver in hand....the One from my guitar case that i left in the living room . well, i tripped over my ass getting to the living room to find my yamaha rgx721 dg on the floor( this is frightening when your guitar has a pitched headstock ) well it wasn't broken , but Ben managed to remove the screws from the 5 way switch and not even scratch it! i found one in the carpet and the other in the floyd were the arm screws in. :D

hey Wickerman! be afraid, very afraid!....just kidding, my two boys are great. it was my mistake to go to bed and not put my case away. in fact i would let the boys "play guitar" during the day. i just had lots of drool to clean up after. they are cool now . in fact my oldest could play ..hot cross buns when he was 5 on guitar, its not cliffs of dover! but its still cool. all kidding aside Ben took better care of my rgx than the moron who owned the ibanez!!! :D

PISS ON THAT!!! I gave the guitar back tonight and didn't get so much as a thanks! He didn't even offer to pay for the $8 strings he told me I "had to use." Let alone the work and parts that would have cost $50 at least from a pro. What a JERK!!! Then, since his musical ear BLOWS he can't even tell a difference in the tone! He can't even tell a difference in the amount of buzzing! I'm SOOOO FREAKING PISSED OFF!!!

Then, he gave me a sticker of a christian band I like (he has about 10 duplicates) and on the way out he told me "Why do you even want that? You're not going to put it on a case or ANYTHING!" I said "How punk of you." Then he went on a rant about how I was just jealous of his "bitchin" case and told me I could let myself out.

I've repaired this kids guitars twice now, and his russian made Electro-Harmonix pedals seven times between he two. (Big Muff and Poly Chorus) We'll see if he ever gets any more free service after this latest bull.

You're 17 - and you can take apart and put guitars together.

I'm 17 and cant play them right :) BUT! I KNOW HOW PICKUPS WORK! which is more than I can say for both my 16 year old friends who have played guitar for 3 years now. HA!

Hey, that's more than most punk players know and you haven't been playing long. It's always good to go out an learn as much as you can about guitars. It can get you out of some sticky situations and save you some dough!

Wickerman, you deserve to be pissed at the twit. how ungratefull of him. but rest assured, some day he will get ripped off because of his own stupidity! i have done work for free but i tell the guys to bring the strings they want put on. its amazing how many guitar players don't know how to take care of thier guitars , or keep them in good shape. some of that is because of lack of information , human nature , misinformation from others( who "know" everthing allready) and ignorance to the fact that a guitar is a finely( sometimes not) tuned instrument. once again , i am sorry your friend was ungrateful , its his loss. pat yourself on the back anyway for doing a good job. :D

EASY WICK!!! Whoa up! Take a couple of deep breaths. That's it. Good, now feel your heart rate slow down. That's it. Feel better now? ;)

Good.

As you get older, you'll find that happens an awful lot. Just don't let it happen to you again. If the guy needs help later, he will, send him to a guitar tech & let him pay through the nose. It'll take one time & he'll be begging again. DO NOT DO IT!

Keep your own stuff up & sounding good & let theirs suck. Your true friends will not be a problem.

Peace Brah... :thu:

Binky...

Got my goggles right here. As a matter of fact...I'm due for a new pair. I did go to the optometrist...and they tried out the lenses in these weird industrial clunky adjustable frames...like what someone in Devo would wear. When they asked what kind of frames I wanted...I said "those"...hahaha..

Wick...

Charge up front. "Your guitar needs this done. It'll cost you this much to do it." When they pay, then do the work.

Ted

My only prob with the goggles is a short focal range. I have about a 2.5X correction. Got some nice glasses for reading from the Optomitrist. But I found they werent good enough for close work, so I bought a pair of 3.5X off the drug store rack. A compromise between the reading glasses & the goggles. They are pretty good for guitar work if I have enough lights on.
