Future Music Apology To Sound On Sound

Recommended Posts

If anyone read Future Music this month they had an open letter of apology to Sound on Sound. A freelance writer to Future Music magazine was copying product reviews from Sound on Sound into Future Music over the last year and half. What is your opinion on this matter? That is seriously what you call "effed up". The nerve of that guy...wait...I'm looking up one of the articles I have here...NO! Not Ric Snoman! I like reading his reviews. 'Tis sad. I hope this is an isolated incident and it doesn't happen with my other, more beloved, magazines. And this is why I say: Craig Anderton for President! Peace

<> I think it represents the nadir of journalistic ethics, and believe me, that's REALLY low. I was told that the Future Music "exclusive" review of Cubase SX was based on the Nuendo review in Sound on Sound (I haven't verified this but my source is highly reliable). It's bad enough to rip off someone else's words, but to pass off FICTION AS A PRODUCT REVIEW is beneath contempt. No wonder people come here and have a bad attitude about reviewers. Incidents like this naturally put doubts in people's mind about the ethics of all journalists. I think the author got off easy, and Sound on Sound is being pretty damn gracious about the whole thing.

<> Apparently no worries, you can read his material in Sound on Sound, even before he writes it! << I hope this is an isolated incident and it doesn't happen with my other, more beloved, magazines.>> I can guarantee this doesn't happen with EQ or other UEM publications. Sadly, though, this kind of thing is just one of many reasons why we're using more staff writers. <> Well thanks much, but just out of curiousity, what does that have to do with the Sound on Sound thing? Frankly, I'm insulted that none of my articles were ripped off...jeez, isn't my writing good enough to steal? True story: Back in the 70s, a manual that I wrote for a computer company on how to build their power supply kit was ripped off by a guy who wrote an article called "How to Build a Power Supply." Much of it was word for word. I called him up and he honestly didn't seem to realize it was a problem. Weird.

The apology doesn't go far enough. The editor, author, and magazine should all be punished. In addition to harming Sound On Sound, fraudulant, plagerized reviews harm companies whose products were under review, and readers who trusted their veracity. Thank God for editors like George Petersen, Mitch Gallagher, and Frank Wells, and writers like me, whose ethics are beyond reproach. Oh boy, sometimes I just crack myself up. -Peace, Love, and BrittanyLips

This is absolutely despicable  I haven't read Future Music in years because I basically think it sucks, but I am a subscriber to Sound on Sound and agree with b'lips that the 'apology' doesn't count for much. It's hard enough for good magazines to survive in the current market without leeches like these sucking out their lifeblood and betraying the readership. I'm not big on lawsuits but I feel that one would be highly justified in this case.

[/b][/quote]Basically, what I meant was that, not trying to "brown nose" or anything, I've valued the articles that you and some of your other colleagues write. Sound On Sound and Future Music, though I've professed my admiration for them before, have only been on my reading plate for a few years now. But Keyboard Magazine has been there for me since I can remember. So...it's just a typical, ideal election "stab", all in fun, for me: you nominate the candidate that you trust the most and has been there the longest. I'll still read them (FM), but you know the thought of this might be in the back of my mind, where it won't be with some other magazines. ;) Peace

I have most of the issues of Future Music that had the copied reviews from Sound On Sound, I'm shocked that the reviews that were copied are from old issues of Sound Sound and put off as being new. I'll still read FM and now thanks to the apology I will now start buying Sound on Sound.

My girlfriend got me a subscription to Future Music a year ago, and that mag has gone so downhill, and is so totally fluff, ass kiss product review, that I'll probably never get it again- and this was before the plagiarism thing!

Here's another example of journalistic integrity at its finest, this time from the bean counters (quoted with permission from the Lefsetz Newsletter, copyright 2003 Robert Scott Lefsetz): ----------------------- "Don't you find it funny that 'Blender' LIED about its numbers? 'Rolling Stone' changed its COMPLETE editorial philosophy based on FALLACIOUS statistics." ------------------------ That's right...the magazine whose high sub numbers put such a scare into Rolling Stone that they changed their format to counter Blender was lying! Too much. Too sick.

Tommorrow I'm meeting with a high-end copyright attorney and I'd be curious to know what she says about all this. -Peace, Love, and Brittanylips
