Most depressing musical moment?

Nollykin

Recommended Posts

Does anyone ever try and try and no matter how hard they try it just never seems to get any better?

I went to my music lesson - singing actually - and had the crappiest session. It just made me soo depressed. Just started thinking about how hopeless I can be, and how I'm never going to get there.

I mean - sure. I will. one day. But its really... bleh.

Any of you guys get like that after a while? Do share :)

If it were easy, it would be boring and there'd be no need for this forum.

When you're having a bad day with the guitar, here's something to do to remind you just how far you've progressed: flip your guitar over and play it the other way. So, if you're right handed, play it as a lefty. In about 5 seconds you'll realize that you've come a long way!

I recently read a chat transcript where Joe Satriani was asked when he realized he was a great player. His answer was something like, "I'm not yet."

It's a life long journey for all of us. And how does that saying go? "The point of the journey is the journey itself, not the destination."

I think my most depressing musical moment was about a year or two ago. I was jamming with some friends, and someone said "Wow, you sound great on guitar. You should have played that all along instead of bass." It was that moment that I realized that I had been playing the wrong instrument for nearly 20 years. It was also that day that I became a guitarist, and have been ever since. Funny thing is, as I develop on guitar, it becomes easier and easier for me. I feel so much more comfortable, I slip into the groove when playing rhythm, and improvised solos just flow, all those years of struggling with the bass, feeling like I just wasn't devoloping as I thought I should come rushing back to me. It's staggering at times. And depressing as hell. But it keeps me going at the same time.

I really don't know what to put here.

Every time I work up a new tune I feel like it's the toughest thing to do. Then, after a while, it's stars to come around. Just music's way of keep you humble I suppose...

I'm actually having one of my more depressed days today. I have definately been more aware of my limitations then I might normal.

I go through this periodically as I believe most players do. There's just so darn much music out there and only so much time to absorb it. My musical job jar is bulging to overflow.

Hang in there

Peace

Nolly,

I've found in learning to play guitar that my progress is not a steady climb but has a lot of plateus on the way up. Put in another way, sometimes, I'll have a period of time when I'm learning a lot and progressing really well. Then there'll come a time that I feel like I'm doing the same thing. The key is, keep trying the things you can't do. One day, you will. One of those days I remember was when I finally learned how to do a good vibrato on guitar. I didn't do anything differently than before, just kept trying like I did but for some reason, one day I was able to do it.

So, keep it up even though you don't think it's doing any good. Chances are, it is doing good but it may take some time before it shows/catches on.

All the time. But then every so often, it sounds so good. You aren't any different than most beginners.

What helps is the encouragement and understanding that you get here.

One of my most discouraging moments came after buying my new guitar so that I could go back to playing again after 34 years. Looked at my old music, and tried an open F chord. Couldn't do it correctly. Kept at it (practice!), and voila, no more problems with that chord! What kept me going after such a miserable discovery? The people on this board (especially Tedster).

Keep at it...all of ya. You can all do it! Keep the guitar in your hands whenever you can. You'll be killin' folks with your licks in no time!!!

Thanks you lot - you're right. Yanno... I was sittin there thinking "I'm never gonna be able to switch between an Em to a C - to an A something." I just figured, that Id do it one day. that day never came until I suddenly thought "Hmm. maybe I should practice that." and suddenly, voila! I can now switch between those pretty well. Go me :D

hehe

As for the singing - I think I'll be alright with that - I just had a really hsit lesson and didnt do anything right. So I was a little pissed.
