everglass
Hi all, I recently tried out the Marshall TSL122 (2x12 combo amp). Realising it would be more convenient for me to have the head in the control room and speaker in the live room I am now trying out the TSL100 head and a 1960A Quad Box. I was expecting a fairly similar sound - boy was I wrong. What I want to know is this..... I have a VOX AC30 which gives me that really OPEN sound. Am I just not used to the CLOSED quad box sound and do you think that it is a good idea to have one of each so as to have two contrasting set-ups? Or is a closed sound a really different beast that I will never get my head around. What are the main differences of the two beasts. Sorry I sound a bit flakey, but I am rather confused! Gabriel E.
do you think that it is a good idea to have one of each so as to have two contrasting set-ups? Of course! You should have as much gear as possible. Open back and closed back cabinets sound very different from each other and it is not realistic to get the sound of one from the other. If you like both, a good compromise would be to get a cabinet with a removable rear panel. I have a Carvin 2x12 cab that has this feature and it's very nice. I believe Rivera, Mesa Boogie and a few others also make cabs with removeable rear panels. not coaster MODERATOR
I've made my own panels for open back combos. It's pretty no-brainer. Use some 3/8 birch or even regular ply and cut to taste. You will hear more chunka chunka when you enclose the speaker.

Little known fact...hmmm...a good one for Passover, too: When Moses came down from the mountain...he had a few other commandments directed at musicians, which, for obvious reasons, didn't make it into the big book. Gabriel has voiced the first: "Thou shalt have as much gear as possible". So, whether you're Christian, Jewish, even agnostic...this is one commandment that, as a musician, you cannot ignore. Gabriel E.
Tedster: Thanks! I'll show that to my wife. Now maybe she'll understand that my expensive habit is actually a tenet of our faith. lrbreez
Duane Allman's 4x12 Marshall cabinets were open back (loaded with JBLs). He used 50watt Mk II Marshall heads. Buddy
