riffy
Asking for a little help here as well. Anyone who has time or inclination I would ask to download an mp3 from here and let me know what you think of the guitar sound on this. I am sure I could have probably done a better job with the recording as really I am just starting to learn recording. I used my Dual Rectifier and a Recto cab. Mic'ed with an sm57 close mic'ed to the center of the cone. The only mic-pre I have at present is an ART. I need to get a better one of those I know as I am going direct to my sound card which is the standard one on the pc... Not even SoundBlaster Live quality... That is my very next purchase, a quality sound card... Thanks in advance guys! Song is called "Coming To Get You" Ps. The playing I know is not the best so kinda overlook it...lol riffy http://artists3.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Lone/

Here is the best advice you can get: don't waste time trying to futz around making that work. Cheapest solution is to get a Line6 Guitar Port. Next cheapest is to get a Line6 Pod Pro, which I think responds better. Next cheapest would be a Grace 101 preamp (which isn't optimal, but is working for me at the moment for a change), or a Symetrix 202 if you can find one, and a much better soundcard. Or an Avalon M5 if you're used to adjusting your amp's eq in tiny miniscule fractions and into moving mics distances of 3 mm at a time in conjunction with angular variance of 1 degree. To do it right though, you need a discrete preamp maybe like an old API, and then the right '57 (they're all impossibly different) or maybe even a 421, and some sort of big ugly large diaphragm something or another (seems less critical to me for some reason) a ways back in a room with at least about 450 sq. ft. featuring a highly complex blend of complicated surface textures and non-parallel walls of at least 3 different compositions and compliance, elevated and outside of any major nodes, then you have to find the right speaker which is probably a Celestion Vintage 30 or Greenback, but it has to be the right one because they're all different, and then you ... Well, I think at that point it's probably going to be "acceptable". One day I'll be able to sleep at night maybe. Otherwise the gunk of cheapnis will always be present and haunt you every waking moment. Nollykin
G'day. From what I can tell, What your problem is is your soundcard, I'd say. Its okay - but it needs a little work On a low budget, you could get an Sblaster live (not value - get the one with the panel you can put in a CDrom slot - very handy), and very good sound quality. Then you can mic the amp, and use the ol "plug it into the mic slot" deal. if you want. This will get fairly mediocre sound. Of course, if you're really into it, get something like the C-Port input system . Its new, and has about 8 inputs, with a rackmount input, with mic preamps, etc. It also has a high quality sound input card and output card for your PC. It's been designed with home recording in mind, so it is apparently one of the best ways of home recording. Other things include Aardvark products (like the AAR 20/20 etc) and such things as this. Look up digital input cards. Thats where you want to go for home recording. But I'd say the C-port is your most cost effective option. Thats gonna be my next investment. TurboDog
Is that a hint of Wah I hear every now and then? What effects are you adding to yur signal? The delay/chorus is a bit heavy for me. Some very solid playing though.
riffy
Hey thanks for you replies guys! The wah is a Bah Horsie. The delay and some verb come from a digitech studio 400 processor in the loop of the recto... No chorus though. riffy

rog951
I bet you've never listened to any Steve Vai before, have you? Considering the signal path you used (from the mic to the 'puter), I gotta say it sounds damn good. If it were me, I'd probably back off on the 'verb a little bit, but guitar tone is about the most subjective thing in the world so I'm not complaining. The playing was solid too...don't be so modest. Of course, people can only listen to someone (even the best guitarist in the world) solo over a single pattern for so long...you need to throw in the occasional "Barry Manilow key change" or something, to keep people's interest. A non-guitarist would never make it all the way through! Also, the drum machine thing sounds almost totally dry. If there was a little more ambience on the drums, I think it'd make the whole thing sound more natural... None more black.
mesabplayer
Hey riffy, nice shredding.Really like the guitar tone, but I'm bit biased.I have a Dual Rec also...What kind of guitar, and p.u.'s? The percussion sounds are a bit cluttered, IMO, but I dig the vibe.Right On.....
riffy
Thank you! I appreciate it! I used an Ibanez 7 string guitar for that one with Blaze pickups in it... riffy
