Do I need to replace my tubes?

Hi,

I own a ADA MP-1 tube preamp, it's a pretty old model.

I bought already used.I think it has 2 12ax7's.

I play it through a fender solid state amp (90w).

I get this unwanted distortion when I play it on the treble position in my guitar.I don't get this fuzz when I'm hooked only to my amp, so it's surely something in the preamp. Is it the tubes that need replacement or something else maybe?

Thanks.

It can't hurt to replace those tubes. And preamp tubes are pretty cheap. Like $10 a tube.

The problem with buying used amps, is you never know what kind of wear the tubes have. And most of us don't have the equipment to check them.

It's a good place to start. If you replace the tubes and the problem persists...then it's time to ask Myles.

Hi,

It seems to me that the problem is in the way you use the pre-amp, not in the device itself. Of course, it loads your amp with some additional overdrive, even if you think you switch off any distiortion. Just like the active pickups - they add some distortion too due to an increased level of signal.

So, first you may to play with most of setups you deal with - the volume of your guitar, the volume of both amps, distortion levels, presence and even reverb. Just put most of these levels on minumum trying to avoid the appearance of ANY distortion.

Actually, if you cannot get a non-distorted sound out of your amp at all, then really the problem may be the core pre-amp itself. I'm not sure about old tubes - sometimes the key electric parameters of pre-amp make it produce distortion by iself. Such devices may produce the noise even in absence of any signal.

Regards,

Denis

Thanks for your help and ideas about this problem.

But this problem isn't a fuzz that exists all the time it happends only when i'm hitting a string when i'm using my treble pickup, it's like the sound of the strings is dirty...

I actually get less humm from the preamp then just my amp+guitar setup.

If you have any ideas about this, please tell me.

Thanks.
