Best 20 Watt Tube Amp ??

Recommended Posts

I want to buy a small tube amp, for Blues/Rock jamming. I had a Boogie Maverick, which sounded pretty good, but at 40 Watts it was just too damn loud. So who makes the best sounding 20 watt tube combo?? Tophat? THD? Fender? how about these new Ashdown amps I've seen advertised? Let me know what you guys use. Please no solid-state amps, I've used 'em and they all suck.

All those choices are great ( I have a Univalve), but I have to tell you... There is not very much difference in volume between these and the Mav (which is a great amp too)in terms of volume. In order to get half the volume of the mav you would have to run the univalve with a 84 in half power to get 4 watts.

If you still have the mav try a hot plate. If not, of couse I am gonna say the THD ( I got rid of my mark IV for the same reasons as you, then I found out about the hotplate... Still like the Univalve better though). Aiken makes a good sounding amp with attenuator built in too.If you look on the Harmony Central amp forum there is a new thread with clips that sound great of the Aiken,THD,Boogie Mk II C+,and a Fuchs...

Good Luck!!

I've got a Vox Pathfinder that is a nice little amp for my studio. Gain control as well as volume. Line out and headphone outs. 15 watts and right around $120.

You should consider the brand new Laney TT20 - 2 EL84, 3 12AX7, half power (triodes instead of pentodes), bright and modern switches, three position loop (disabled, sidechain and insert)... I have mine (head and cabinet, but there's a combo too) since 6 months and I just can't get enough :)

hey Phillipe!

I used to live in Belgium when I was a kid! I lived in Overjiise, near Brussels. In fact, that's where I first started playing guitar. I still miss the pomme frite and the Stella Artois. I'll take a look at these Laneys.

well, thanks for all the suggestions. I've narrowed it down to either a TopHat Club Deluxe ( 20 Watts with 2 6V6 tubes ) or a Budda Superdrive 18 ( 18 Watts using two EL84 power tubes ). Both of these amps are readily available here in Northern California, and are priced similarly. Anybody have specifically used either of these amps?
