Nollykin
Right. Turns out I'll most likely only have a small budget. Now depending on the price I get my guitar for, I could have anything from 300 to 200 dollars left (aussie - the aussie dollar is 50 american cents roughly)... So, after reading up - while a modeling amp would be verry verrrry tasty, I think budgets may prevail here, unfortunately. But hell - it is my first guitar + amp, so yeah. Does anyone know of any decent 10, or 15 watt amps, maybe 20... that are in low price range, but still decent? or if not, any that I should run away from screaming? I'm after a clean distorted sound... not too cruunchy... of course this might not be possible Ta once again. Jedi
I agree, sounds like a small Crate would fit the bill. Namaste Jedi "All conditioned things are impermanent. Wickerman
DEFINETLY get used!!! Crates are pure piles of steaming poo! They sound nasty and break! Look for a used Line 6 or used low end Fender such as a Princeton or Champ.
Nollykin
TurboDog - I will be doing that, but there arent many smaller amps for sale 2nd hand - they get snapped up pretty quick. Jedi - I will do that. On an unrelated note - I notice you say "namaste" a lot - you wouldnt happen to know the song, Namaste, by devin townsend? just wondered. Chip McDonald
Look for a Fender Bullet Reverb, but one with the silver grill cloth.... Seriously. They really got the eq right, and the gain sounds smooth and rich - *surprisingly* rich. The new ones have narrower tone controls (sound "peakier", if that means anything to you) and the distortion is cheezy and buzzy. But for whatever reason, those older ones sound good; you can get a reasonable facsimile of any genre's sound out of them if you keep the tone controls turned down low. They should put that front end in a distortion pedal. Wewus432
One of the coolest small amps in the world is Tech 21-Trademark 10. It's got a direct out, headphone out, extra speaker out and effects. No tubes but you get that SansAmp sound.

Wickerman
Sorry. I keep forgetting he's an aussie. I'm lucky. Sorry, I'll try to keep in mind I have easier access to shops than most people.
Nollykin
Hahaha Yes, darklander has a point. the best thing we have here, is a m"music shop" which is about... 3 metres wide, by 2 deep (actually someones house, his house is out back behind the training studio just behind the shop). There are about... 4 Ibanez guitars (one of which is my SA60 baby) on one (the right) wall, with 5 or six other guitars by noname brands, and about the same amount of basses... about half of which on stands in the floor. the other side has about 5 amps, nothing over 50 watts, and mostly by samick, our cheap shitty brand. The rest is guitars on stands etc.. prolly about 20 guitars in that shop - 7 of which worth looking at. We dont have second hand.. In adleaide, there is Allans music, which is muuuuuuch bigger, but not huge. its big enough though. prolly 200 guitars there. inc basses... and heaps of amps. As for second hand stores, there arent many music ones. at all. period. The best I can do for an amp 2nd hand is ask around friends, classifieds etc so I'm lookin for a cheap shitty amp to practice on, but not too shitty he he Nolly "Money, Bitchez and Cheese!" http://www.playspoon.com/nollykin/files/voxline.gif "I never thought about it, and I never stopped to feel - But I didn't want you telling me just what to think was real. gtrmac
Try to find a Fender Pro Junior. It's a small all tube practice/recording amp. If you get one you will probably want to keep it even if you get a bigger amp later, they sound great. I saw two of them listed here: http://www.vintageguitar.com/classifieds/ Mac Bowne G-Clef Acoustics Ltd. Osaka, Japan
Oscar
Dude, you live in the best damn country in the world (been Down Under a couple o 'times) . As for small amps, try Fender's Frontman Reverb. Comes in 15W or 25W versions. Both have killer clean sounds, are indestructible and can get very decent overdriven sounds if you stick a pedel in front of it. Don't use the dirty channel - it sucks. I've gigged with mine:D. Oscar plays a stock Gibson Les Paul with P90's, a stock Epiphone Alleykat (both strung with .011's with a wound G), a Fender HotRod Deluxe, a Fender Frontman 15 Reverb and a Vox ValveTone. I'm after a clean distorted sound... not too cruunchy... Nolly[/QB] I really like tube Crate amps, but most of their budget models have such a focused solid-state tone... And it seems this is an issue you try to avoid Among the dozens of small and cost-conscious amps there were just few really cool models today. If you look for a new 10-15 watts amp with clean and tasty sound, I would recommend you to test a British *Brat* model produced by Trace Elliot. Despite its solid-state nature it sounds well and seems to be pretty good for home rehearses. I've heard a lot of good words about this amp from very different people. Of course, if you decide to study the market of used amps, you would find a lot of rather tasty devices for the same amount of money. But in this case please do not forget to check the bolts and nuts before the deal - otherwise you may need a help of repair specialist in a month or two. And it will also cost some money

Rim
Try the Marshall AVT20 for $300 US (I get confused with the conversion so this is either way out of your budget or way under it). It has a ballsy sound for such a small amp. I think I read somewhere that some band actually used it to record some tracks because it can give a great sound without being too loud. Good clean and distorted sounds. aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com
