everglass
I am going to buy an Ashdown Bass Head for Bass guitar. Can I use my guitar Cabinet as the "speakers" or are bass cabs different altogether. In other words is a 4x12 Marshall (guitar cab) different to a 4x12 Asdown (bass cab)? Is a speaker just a speaker? Is a speaker just a speaker? No, but you can use a guitar cab if you have to. It comes down to what its rated. Our bassist was the victim of theft, and regularly used his 4X12 cab as his bass cabinet. SOunds good to me......though I wish he had at least a fifteen under it. DC
A bass cabinet is very different from a guitar cab for several reasons. Bass speakers are designed to handle low end where guitar speakers really aren't. Bass cabs are usually much more robustly designed to handle the extra vibrations. To have the bass competing with a drum kit in volume, you really need speakers designed for bass. My fav's are 15" but 10"s designed for lows are also popular. I think running a bass through a Marshall guitar cab is asking for blown speakers unless you're talking very low volume. -David http://www.garageband.com/artist/MichaelangelosMuse

He's been using that setup (sometimes slaving his second Black Widow 100w combo) as long as I've known him. (3-4 years) It works fine. It would prolly sound better with speakers designed for lower frequencies but as it stands it works fine.

lrbreez
I play both lead and bass. A Marshall 4x12 won't cut it unless you want a ZZTop or Cream type sound or if you are playing at a very, very low volume. Not only are the speakers different, but the cabinet is damped differently and the seal has to be very tight. Buddy

Your experience is definitely different than mine in that regard. We play pretty farking loud and the bottom is tight and focused.....but he is using a Peavey tube head as bass amp.....with a Precision.
