Boggs

Recommended Posts

Folks on several other boards know me as Boggs, which is short for Greg Bogoshian. I own and play several different guitars primarily for our church band, Circle of Friends here in Rochester, NY. I have a website where you can see a few of my interests and my gear and even hear a few sound clips if you wish to take the time to do so... I'm going to be 50 the end of this year, so I almost officially qualify as an old fart (unoficially to many of you, I'm sure). I found you guys through Myles, who probably doesn't even know who I am, although I respect his insights and helpfulness a great deal. Here is the link to my website index page. www.angelfire.com/ny5/boggs.com . It is ad-free, so no worries about popups! I hope to get to know you all better. Cheers! Boggs

Man, I've got a Kazuo Yairi too. Great guitar. Is yours a true Yairi or is it just one that Alvarez is putting out with his name? (It should be signed inside) I got a sweet deal on mine. I payed $600 at a store run by a moron who didn't know what he had. He had Charvelles and Jacksons all over and this beautiful Yairi. I snatched it up so fast! My teacher Paul Vondiziano (famed and world renouwned classical guitarist) told me if I ever saw one to buy it no matter the price. He said it was the best guitar you could get as long as it was actually signed by Kazuo, not just a Yairi model made by someone else. I brought it in and his eyes lit up. It was nearly identical to his. Mine was a little darker red but very close. It was great playing along with him. I wish he hadn't moved... Anyway, welcome. It's always good to have more christians. (I play in my churches band too) Welcome, have fun.

If anyone hasn't heard Pauly V's music, check out PaulVondiziano.com On his music page, he has a link to some mp3s The guy is bloody good!

Welcome.

If you want some age info on the Yamaha, go to the Yamaha Service and Support Page, click on the Solutions Network button. Under the Browse button, click on Guitar & Bass Products and then on Determining When a Guitar or Bass was Manufactured. In the Answer, after the first paragraph you'll see:Click here for the Guitar & Bass Serial Number Wizard to determine the 'manufatured date'. Click on the here & fill in the info. Understand that the dates repeat every 10 years so if you don't know which decade it was built you're out of luck.

Thanks very much for the warm welcome! My ex-Yairi was a true Yairi as it was signed by Kazuo. It breaks my heart that it had to be turned back in because they could just never resolve the problem. They were both works of art. There was an engineering/design problem somewhere. A real pity... That guitar broke my heart. I'm having a very difficult time trying to decide what to replace it with. I have played many, but I am also interested in trying Carvin's C980 Rosewood Jumbo. I also saw that their classical has a 1-7/8 inch nut width which may work very well with my hand size... If I were in Los Angeles, it would be a no-brainer as I could just pick one up and play it. I know I can return them if I don't like them, but I can't decide which one to try.

I also want to thank those of you who took the time to check out my website. You took time from your lives to learn a bit about me, and I don't take that for granted. It is sincerely appreciated. Boggs

Why'd you have to return your Alverez??? I wouldn't be able to do it. That guitar is my baby! Man, I'm sorry. I feel for ya.

In case it helps you, I've played the Carvin CL450 classical and it's very nice. It's got a very similar neck to my Yairi and actually sounds good plugged in. I played a Cordoba (not sure on the name, it was something along those lines) and when you plugged it in it had the typical peizo tone. It was really bad. Especially on a classical. The Carvin on the other hand sounded quite natural. It wasn't 100% but the only ways to get that are mics and accelerometers.

I haven't played the Cobalt 980 Jumbo but I've been looking at that too. I'm looking to buy a new steel string and I'm torn between that and a Fender GA-43. The Fender is awesome because it uses an accelerometer and sounds perfect plugged in. It sounds as if you just have your guitar mic'ed. Also, I've been looking at an Alverez Yairi DY-40C. I'm torn between those three. The Carvin looks good but I've heard the Fishman Matrix and didn't like it so I doubt I'll get that but Alverez's System 600T is great as well as the Fishman ACLR accelerometer on the Fender...

Anyway, sorry, I'm babbling, hope you find another classical you fall in love with man. Good luck.

Thanks, Wickerman. It was really, really hard to turn it back in, but I really had to. It chorused out so badly on the A and D strings after 5 minutes of playing it that you could hardly hear the fundamental tone. Both guitars did the same thing, and they were both shipped back to the factory in St. Louis more than once. They even changed the type of fret wire as they thought that was the source of the problem. It improved it slightly, but it was still virtually unplayable within 10 minutes of playing it. It couldn't handle any energy being put into the neck, apparently. It was anywhere along the fretboard. The only way it could be played without chorusing out was to press right on the fret you were playing... Truly a bizarre problem. Boggs

It broke my heart, for sure. Some of the music I play and write just works best on a classical guitar. The jumbo, I'm hoping, will be almost as effective and will cover more ground as well... If I knew how the Carvin classical sounded unamplified, I would leanmore heavily towards it, but I have been so spoiled by the sound of that Yairi that it would be difficult for me to "settle' for less than that. The shop owner let me borrow his personal Horabi classical while myne was at the shop. I had to use it for a couple of performances at church, and my wife (who likes the sound of my 12 string way better than even the Yairi) said to me, "Why didn't he just lend you a Kazoo? It would've sounded more interresting than that guitar!" At least she got a better appreciation for the Yairi... Boggs

Welcome aboard... I'm new here too. But I dont have the experience under my belt yet - just the local newbie who is waaaay too young and enthusiastic for anyone to notice yet. I'll have to get that post number down there going for people to notice me methinks :) hehe.

But then again, tis all about the guitar, not the person, right? :)
