weezer_gurl
Im thinking of looking into a Gibson SG Gothic; about how much do they cost? And what do you think of them (high or low quality)? thanx ~laura
Gabriel E.
They cost $800-$900 which is pretty fair. They are going to be better than an Epiphone SG since they are made in the US instead of Korea. I like the cosmetics - a cool idea. SGs are great guitars. They have a really brash sound. Not a jazz guitar but great for anything else (except maybe country). TurboDog
Are the Gothics the ones with that off-blue/grey paint with the black hardware? I always thought that was an ugly combination. If so, I played one once, but it was a while back and I can't remember if I liked it or not. I seem to rememeber thinking the body was fairly thin. I'd look into the pickups and make sure that's what your after. I believe the gothics have hotter pickups. Crap, I really don't remember. I think I've killed a few too many brain cells. Wickerman
Actually, Epiphone just came out with their goth series and it's the exact same as the Gibson Gothics. This isn't one of those "Well, the Epiphone is good for the price." things. I'm not kidding, I played one of the Epi's and it's the EXACT same guitar. The inlays on the neck were different. That's it. It sounded exactly the same. I know with the low end Epiphones they don't even compare to Gibson's but Gibson's low end stuff now is absolute crap. The Juniors and Goths shouldn't share the same name as such great guitars as their Les Paul Standards and Classics. I love Gibson but their low end now is really poor. On the other hand, you can easily find Epiphones for $600 that are better than the $1500 Gibsons. Such as, the Goth to the Gothic. The Gibson Gothics were always pretty crappy for a Gibson. They had very poor clean tone and were built pretty cheaply. It felt like they were just thrown together. The Epiphone had a decent clean sound and the same shape and feel to the neck. (thin a quick) It's worth checking the Epiphone Goths. I doubt you'll be able to tell any major difference.
Jedi
Tell me if it's me, but I played an SG once and it sounded really thin. I mean it would be great for some Smashing Pumpkins stuff, but aside from that it sounded to thin for my taste buds. Maybe I'm tripping. All SG lovers, straighten me out if I'm way off track. jaccursi
Sam Ash sold SG goths for as low as $500 bucks, so don't by any means pay more than that! For that price, they're ok. They're also very hit and miss. One may be a great guitar, and the next one off the truck may be a joke. I wouldn't be surprised is the Gothic line is nothing more than blemished "regular" guitars. Think about, lets not do any inlays, no finish sanding (the bodies are really bumpy) and no laquer finish. Hmmm. How much money does that save us? Buy my Strat! jsull
All SG lovers, straighten me out if I'm way off track. Hey, you're entitled to your own track. My P-90 SG makes a nice team with my Les Paul. The extra brightness makes a nice change for some songs, but with a little more meat than a Strat or Tele, to my ear. Live, it can really cut through on my sludgier parts. I think it sounds best with Medium-Heavy strings (.011 high E for me) than the light-gauge rubber bands they usually have. You keep the high end, and get a little more bottom. Mostly it's just damn fun to play. Really light, and great access to the upper neck.
Tedster
For those who think SGs are lightweight wimpy guitars, a picture is worth a thousand words... http://www.elektra.com/images/artist/acdc/photos/msg/garden13.jpg "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

Namaste Jedi... :nods head: Boy. Oh boy... SGs depend very much on the model you play. For example. I played the Gibson '61 SG. Hated it. It was thin and tin foil like. Then, I picked up an SG standard and plugged it in and it was rich and thick. It was a beautiful thing. It was great clean but even better with some nice thick distortion on it. (As Teddy showed, Angus Style) One of my favorite axes is an Epiphone G-400 Custom. http://static.epinions.com/images/ext/inst/99/instElectric_GuitarsG400_Custom.jpg It's delicious! I love the little bugger. It's warm and thick and rings longer than your ears after a Spinal Tap concert! It stays in tune well and is very reliable. I'm very impressed. My friend and I agree that it sounds better than his 1970s Les Paul. So, there's my opinion. I just say, check out a couple models. Don't base your opinion on one guitar. Jedi
Thanks folks! I figured my opinion was pretty limited because I only played one and it had really light strings. I'm a 13 gauge man so you guess that the contrast was a bit shocking to what I'm used to hearing in my ear. And Tedster, great picture. That was what was confusing me. I knew the main guy from AC/DC used one, and they're pretty freakin' heavy. I'm interested now so I'm going to go try some at our local Guitar Center or something, because I did like the playability of thing for sure. Thanks again, fellow guitar junkies. Wickerman
13s? Whoa. I had a friend that used 13s (ripped his Charvelle's Floyd Rose right off over 6 months) I could never get used to them. They sounded better, no doubt, they were just too big under my fingers. I envy people who can actually use them. Anyway, hope you find some guitars you enjoy. The Bear Jew
I played a Gibson SG Gothic at a Guitar Center once... Aside from the weenie strings, the sucker played nicely and sounded pretty ballsy. It wasn't as heavy as my '78 SG, but the sound was kickin'. I was suprised, because I was sure I'd kind of laugh at the tone(being a LP man.) If they're going for $500, I'd say it's a good deal. And yeah, Angus is the man, but other famous SG guys include Ian MacAye of Fugazi and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
machinex
At the Sam as near me they had a sale going on where if you bought a Gothic les paul, you get the gothic SG for free, and vice versa... I didnt play the SG but I tried the les paul just for the hell of it. It was pretty decent but i wasnt super fond of the pick ups, they were more for metal-y highs, sounded kinda empty.. I prefer a thicker warm tone.. Overall it wasnt a bad guitar.. If you changed the pickups out for some alnico II pros it would prolly sound better. not coaster MODERATOR
We've got one laying around the house. It sure looks cooler than my Strat. I would spend a little more and put some lockers on it.
strat0124
A P90 equipped SG will sound way diff than the humbucker equipped one. If you're into a Stones/Humble Pie/Foghat like grind....P90's are for you. FOr the high gain stuff....go with the humbuckers, but you'll still want to swap them out, though they are ok, just won't cut it for metal. SG's have the best necks of ANY guitar I've ever played. Mine's a battered 65 with P90's and it doesn't sound like the new ones. To me the new ones are awful bright in comparison. Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in

The Bear Jew
True dat... F.Z. was a SG man sometimes. Also Pete Townshend, Clapton (Cream-era,)the Corrosion Of Conformity boys and Santana (old days, before the PRS.) I'm pretty sure I've seen the guy from Static -X playing one of those Gothic SGs lately. One thing's for sure about the gothics... they're "none more black!" \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
Cubby_61
I know there is a lot of discussion about Gibson SGs. You might want to check out this web site. Lots of good info. Wickerman
The EverythingSG.com is bootleg! They have a few Epi's listed there (just copied from Epiphone.com) but don't even have the best model, the Custom. The Custom is a great guitar. They have two Epiphone SGs there that are good but not the great one. I'm offended. G-400 Custom owner
Cubby_61
Epiphone is not currently offering the SG-Custom in it's lineup which is why it's not on the EverythingSG page. I had one for a while and I agree that it is an awesome guitar. I traded it for a '92 Gibson SG Custom and have been very happy with it.
