AmadMozart
Thought it might be fun to share current projects with each other - anyway, here's mine. I am doing a 22 song CD for my church's music ministry. I did the basic tracking prior to going in for surgery last week. We tracked a 60 person vocal choir, the grand piano, and a 20+ person bell choir in a single 8 hour session (lots of breaks as well that night ). Our setup was three AT 4050's on the vocal choir (left, center, right) with the choir up on a three level ampitheatre riser - from left to right the sections were arranged - sopranos, altos, tenors, basses. Two blue line AKGs on the grand piano and a pair of KM184's on the bell choir in an ORTF, and a Neumann U87ai was put up in a figure 8 at the other end of the hall to catch some ambient spaces. All in all - 8 tracks to a DA88 on that night. Then transferred to Digital Performer back at my studio where I will add the soloists and instrumentalists over the next few weeks while I am in recuperation mode. Pretty busy project that we are trying to complete by Christmas. The money raised will go to the WTC Relief Fund. I am doing the whole thing pro bono - but for those who know me - all of my engineering/production work is done pro bono - all I need to do is believe in the project. If anyone is interested in a copy of the CD when it is completed - let me know - it's all for a good cause. I would love to know what special projects everyone else is working on Cheers, Mark ------------------ http://www.broadjam.com/artistprofile/artistindex.asp?artistID=936 or listen at... http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/294/mark_coming_project.html http://www.broadjam.com/artistprofile/artistindex.asp?artistID=936 or listen at... http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/294/mark_coming_project.html
offramp
Trying to figure out the ergonomics and layout of the studio I've moved into the second bedroom of the apartment I moved into in the middle of Sept. phibraphonic
Trying to rescale my "vinyl multitrack recorder". Despite the fact I was able to get a "TPG" (track-per-groove)rectopium my investors want the "45 big bang factor". Seriously I am looking for inspiration. What better way than to look through all my old EQ issues! Phibe
dansouth
I'm trying to finish one of the hundreds of projects that I have started. Then I'll probably move on to one of the thousands I haven't. -
I've alluded to it in other posts, but I'm putting together some songs I'm writing/producing/performing by myself. (I sing, play piano, keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, etc... I don't do all those things competently, but I try... ) The music is lush, dense, chamber guitar pop... There's a very strong emphasis on songs and melody, but there's also big productions that take their cues from the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds/Smile, Les Paul/Mary Ford, and Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound". Pretty much unmarketable stuff as far as contemporary Top 40 music goes but I'm having a blast working on it. I plan to put up a web page and release songs for free to whoever wants to download 'em. I'm getting very close to finishing the production of the first song, but I'm probably going to wait until I have about three songs ready to go before I release the first batch to the net. PlugHead
Hello all, I've been recording/performing an earthy dirge (very Waits-like, 'cept the voice!) with piano, tuba, trombone, bowed saw (my Stanley!), firebells, empty large kerosene tin, metal afro pick scratching a tin guiro, and vox. All recorded in a couple of passes for that, how do you say - "loose" vibe. Mostly recorded with Royers, Soundelux U-99 (Christ, that and the RNC tracking live - whooow!!) Neumann's, and AKG's thru various pre's to a DA-88, (damn those 16 bit devices anyways:rolleyes All considered, it turned out well - definitely suits it's intended venue: THEATRE! Good luck with the choir/CD - I've enjoyed the challenges of guerilla choir recording - did a local fundraiser CD here with our local community choir as well! jnorman
just wrapping up the final tracking for the second CD for a flute and harp duo called rosewynde - largely celtic and traditional music. the flute went through a royer r-121 and a rode NTK as a stereo pair, and the harp had a akg c391b on the soundboard, with the NTK and r-121 down low in the sweet spots at the front of the harp. mild compression, no eq, moderate amount of large hall, harp panned out pretty wide L/R, and flute panned to about 10 and 2. tracked on a roland VS workstation, mixed down to a tascam cd-rw700. mastering will be done by kevin nettlingham in vancouver. a pair of neumann km184s was used on a couple of the flutes parts, but i am not too happy with those tracks. the royer is a wonderful tool, and when used in combination with a good condenser, it yields an incredibly rich, warm sound. you can hear mp3s from the new CD at www.mp3.com/rosewynde - if you want to hear what the royer and NTK sound like together on a solo part, try "syrinx by claude debussy". jnorman sunridge studios salem, oregon jnorman sunridge studios salem, oregon

ABECK
I just finished setting up my wee little studio in the basement of my new house. 1st house really. Man I'm diggin' not being in an apartment. Now I can monitor at 85dB! Woo hoo. An old college buddy/bandmate (man we really thought we were going somewhere back then) is bringing his portable multitrcker to my place, to dump tracks into my DP setup for overdubbs and mixing. Zero pressure - should be fun! On the more professional tip, I'm waiting to finish tracking overdubbs with Eric Marcos and Normal Noises, for his sophmore album. http://ericmarcos.com Cash is tight, so he's studio shopping now. Everything is on 2" tapes now, but some Pro-tools work will probably be performed for the mix. On these latest tracking sessions, I've been replacing the old Bass cab track with a new one using my newly aquired reamp. I've also been tracking guitar and vocals with my C1 mic. It was hard to get used to at 1st because I'm used to a tube mic for vocals, but it does cut through a mix. That's all Andrew
FoxTick
i recently finished mixing 11 songs for my freind's band. this project was tracked on a roland VS840 at 32kHz. that was by accident actually, we meant to track at 44.1 but whattya gonna do - it sounds good. anyway, once everything was tracked, we transfered everything to my DAW (via analog, since my DAW don't go down to 32k) for editing, effects and overdubbing vocals. the mixes actually turned out pretty good - they have that lo-fi quality that suits the band's musical style quite well. once the songs are all done, ill try to post them somewhere so that all of you can hear them and tell me how crappy my mixes sound. ricknbokker
My new project is more than just a project...it involves rebuilding my all- analog studio for use as a fun, get-ideas-on-tape sorta room, while at the same time considering purchases that will move my latent, sorry, analog ass into the digital/DAW realm. As stated on these forums before...I have no idea what I'm doing. Should be fun! Steve (it costs how much??!!!)

blas
Been workin' way too long (over 7 months) on a song for the home town football team. It's called "Ram Jam" (guess you realize we're in St. Louis) and has that stadium feel. We've reworked the horn parts two different times, the rhythm guitar three and the lead guitar stuff four times. This is all a "spec job", I think I'll kill myself if it doesn't fly and I don't see some $$$$$$$!!! The upside is I arranged a orchestra version "Ramth Jamth", that is both beautiful and very driving. Both versions will be on the disc. What makes this project really grow feet is that in the break areas, (the crowd barks out "Ram Jam") I'm working on lining up both players and local celebrities to be part of the crowd. That should help when it comes to airplay. And if the Rams continue to play the way they've started......I might be able to pay-off my studio equipment debt! Lee Flier
Yeah, and d. gauss' new record kicks ass! So check it out! Well as a lot of you know, I have a new band as of June with some great guys that I've known and respected for a couple of years, and I'm totally nutso about them, and we're in the process of working up a whole mess o' new tunes and about to start recording some stuff on the 21st, got a buncha gigs coming up, etc. So that's keeping me pretty busy! Great to hear what everybody else is doing, I definitely want to check some of it out. --Lee
Dogfur
I am trying to figure out how to market the last production I did (www.10Ton.com) and moving on to produce an album for the "rap" guy from that project. Also supposedly working on a soundtrack for a documentary about a sunken ship in Lake Tahoe, and trying to figure out how to turn my 15' by 30' basement into a control/recording split. All while doing my day job ( sound design and production for a gaming company ) and being in the "Dadlands" with my 6 month old son. No spare time, but I've never been happier... Alndln
I was given 3 master tapes of unreleased stuff by a well known reggae singer who passed away about 3 yrs ago,I was told to be creative and do whatever I want. The tapes were transfered to Pro Tools and saved as .Aiff and given to me on hard drives so I can batch convert to .Wav.I'm dragging the stuff back and forth between Sonar and Nuendo.I normally hate working on other peoples stuff but under these conditions I couldn't pass it up,plus no real time limit.Since I'm doing all the music over, matching tempo's is a bit difficult. This will probably take a while since 2 months later I'm still just finishing 1 song. robmix
I just finished mixing a new female singer/songwriter - kind of like Juliana Hatfield. Cool music but I had to do a lot of fixing including replaying guitars and retracking lead vocals that the producer just didn't do a good job on. Hey whatever it takes . . . I'm also involved in a lengthy project with a new 5 girl pop group - major label, big money kind of thing. Everyone pray for the pop thing to hold out just a bit longer, please !!!! We've been writing for a young female, huge voice and talent as well on RCA. A lot of politics involved in that one. I'll post if it actually happens. Also been thinking about a project with my wife - maybe a Curve kind of record, female NIN. That's about it. donfolkcafe.com
I am preparing the studio to do a 4 song demo recording for a friend of my wife. They are looking to do a recording as a means of soliciting back up bands (big bands) and agencies. They are mostly doing cabaret style music and the selections are songs like, All of Me. The musical arrangements are simple and will only be key's, guitar, bass and possibly drums (if I can get my nephew to sign on). I have taken most of the summer off but have recently finished some live stuff that I have put off from the spring. I have spent much of my recent time on a shopping spree. Right now I am mostly focused on guitars and amps. I have been tweaking a Trace Elliot Velocette SE amp I recently purchased. I"ve added a variety of NOS tubes (preamp and output) for different sonic results. So far I'm very impressed. I also started work helping out a friend with his new studio. Construction is going along slowly (mine took almost 2 years) but steady progress is being made. I'm handling it on the technical end only. I recently ran conduit all through out the site and the drywall has just been completed. I am now working on the design of the patchbays and spec-ing out the cabling. I'll soon order the cable and begin soldering the sub assemblies. I'll be dealing with computer configuration (TDM with Procontrol), Digital and clock dist. and interconnects. This is my area of expertise. So I'm fairly busy considering this is a part-time hobby. MusicWorkz
Our current project is a gospel music CD for one of our label artists. We are in the process of finishing overdubs and mixing (EX-PEN-SIVE). We recorded live to 24 channels of DA-88's and did over dubs on ProTools Mix Plus (most track counts are now around 60). We are mixing the project on a Euphonix CS-3000 with a TC Sys6000 (awesome!) among other things. Our next project starting this week is a gospel hip-hop group that has been getting a lot of press here in Philly. This is going to be a challenging project in that we have we have been producing and gigging live with a four piece band (a' la The Roots), but we need to translate the sound and energy to studio (not as easy as it seems-all the arrangments have to be modified-talk about work). Our weapons of choice-MPC 2000XL Studio (maxed), Korg Triton Rack (maxed), Roland XP-30 (hip-hop, 60/70's card) and Juno-6, Fender Rhodes, six-string bass, 5 piece Yamaha drum kit. We've mic'd the four MC's using KSM-44s and AT 4047's thru an AMEK Channel-in-a-box with some great results... joegerardi
For the first time in 10 years, (and not playing for 5) I'm going to TRY to record something for the Keyboard Corner's cover CD. I've never attempted to record anything myself before, but since I've gotten back into playing in the last 6 months I figured I'd give it a try. I'm going to do Enya's "Shepherd Moons." I plan on using the sequencer as a recorder only: No step input, and live takes: Using it as a digital multi-track to do overdubs and layers (with Enya, there's always a TON of them) and then bounce it down to audio 2-track on my PC. I pretty much have all the pre-work done. The one thing I haven't figured out is how to do the final mix to the audio software. gmd
I am currently working on a CD by a "folkie" acoustic guitarist/singer named Johnny Farrell here in Dallas. What started out just as sparce guitar/vocal has changed course and blossomed into kind of his own "Sgt. Pepper". We've had the guitar player for MC 900ft Jesus, Phil Bush come in and add some amazing space-guitar textures, and a violin player from the Ft. Worth Symphony add strings. I've added some electric guitar as well, and we have a female vocalist we're tracking next week. It's amazing sometimes how different(and much more interesting) a project can become after you begin...
