Dylan Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 I've been using a pathetically small 16MB USB Flash drive that fits on my keychain for about 4 months now. I don't know how I ever lived with out it. For those of you who don't know what this is, it's a solid-state storage drive that's usually small enough to fit on your keychain and hooks up directly to any USB port. They are really cheap (about $80 for a 128MB) now and much less cumbersome and portable than using any external storage drive like Zip. Any computer running a current OS can use them without the need to install any drivers! For transferring small files like drivers and patches when a CDR or network is not available there is nothing better or cheaper.
Frost Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 I used to use one and now only use my ipod. I keep a few extra gigs of free space to cover any quick transfers I need. Frost
philbo_Tangent Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 These things are awesome!! I used one for the first time last week at work - - I got about 70 *.jpg screen-prints from my (windows-based) oscilloscope, but was not able to unhook it from the test rig (for complicated reasons). In the past, I'd just roll it over to the nearest LAN port, plug it in & squirt the files right into my PC. But this wasn't possible this time, and I didn't have time to burn it onto a CD (the scope also has a CD burner) because the guy I was working with needed to be on a plane to Europe in an hour. So he whipped out this little dealy on his keychain, plugged it into the USB port, and voila! a new drive popped up. I just dragged the folders to the drive, unplugged it, stuck it into my PC & copied the files in. And he was able to take the file with him to Europe with his keys... I gotta get one of these things... Phil Tangent Studios http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Tangent2/
