thisDude Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 The band was The Mercury Program at New World Brewery in Ybor City. I've followed these guys for a while and they've got a great sound. A little prog/fusion/rock/jazzy/melodic/yada/yada. Worth checking out. The surprise was that there was a DJ (not with the band) "spinning" between sets, using only an iBook, an Oxygen 8, and Reason. By this time I was a bit tipsy from Dr. Death's sweet elixer, but I wanted watch what he was doing because I've never seen this setup live. It sounded like he had 4 different synchopated beats going on in different channels, adjusting the mixes with his right hand using the knobs and playing melody with his left hand all on the fly. My ride left before I could find out who he was, but the point of my story is that I don't think that a "traditional" DJ could even come close to this level of expression spinning vinyl. Good times.
not Cereal Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 that does sound cool. as much as i hate normal cd-playing only dj's, there are some really talented dj's out there that impress the hell out of me. i guess its like guitar. theres some boring chord strummers that suck, and some extreme players that do a whole 'nuther level.
