D. Gauss
i don't think the valvetone is made anymore. great box, got mine new for 30 dollars... as for deals: to me anything over a 1000 dollars is no longer a deal (unless it has 4 wheels or you can live in it!) ibanez tonelock version of tubescream (has the correct chip in it) i.e. decent 808 clone for $39 dollars dearmond x-55 jazzbox guitar. great ax. still some being cleared out by stores. got mine at sam's ass for $199 bucks similarly, the dearmond that looks and sounds like a gretsch solidbody with bigsby (MT-77???)...great axe. again 200 bucks at sam's ass... theough i think they're all gone now. dano 12 string. 12 dollars at musician's friend. what's not to like? old milwaukee 30 packs of beer for $8.99 in my neighborhood! this little plastic straplock type thingy. i don't know who makes them, but they cost a buck each at the store down the street from me. you just snap it over your strap button and yer done. works great. dano tiny yellow plastic tremolo box. it's cheap, it works. guitar center. 10 sets of GHS strings for 20 bucks. too bad they're only 9's or 10's and not 11's.... the super-fold up fender guitar stand. light, works, cost 14 dollars. fender blues jr. amp. simple, solid, loud. though the price keeps going up. you used to be able to get 'em new here for $269 dollars! POD. complain about the shortcomings all you want, but as an all around utility box, it can't be beat. i.e. late night "my neighbors will kill me" recording, backup amp in case live tube amp blows up, fast tone pallette to audition sounds with tunes, etc. fender tex-mex tele. the one with a humbucker in the front and a 5-way coil tap switch. tons of tones. bonehead simple. i think they raised the price on this one too. -d. gauss
strat0124
Damn D....sounds like you been goin through my closets! Yeah I'm after bang for buck as well. Nothing against those who do, but I always get a chuckle seeing guys with 4K worth of guitar and that much of an amp as well playing the clubs for shite pay, pumping out "Mamma's got a Squeezebox" for the masses. IN fact...I may a bit jealous when I see those super cool boutiques.....but I come back to reality when I crank up my "cheap" stuff and it sounds damn good. Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in

Oscar
Carvin has pretty much always made quality stuff for good prices. Unfortunately, you can't buy Carvin stuff around Europe. And if you can (every now and then something pops up), then it's about as expensive as any other brand because of all the middlemen, distibutors and such . Oscar plays a stock Gibson Les Paul with P90's, a stock Epiphone Alleykat (both strung with .011's with a wound G), a Fender HotRod Deluxe, a Fender Frontman 15 Reverb and a Vox ValveTone. jef5f
Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Usually can get new for just over $500. Great Fender tone and can do a good Boogie. And the Carvin Vintage series as has already been discussed. Effects Pedals: The Ibanez Tone-Lok series whic has also been noted, and DOD. Multi-effects: Digitech, though I don't know what the new GeNetX stuff is like. I have the RP2000 which was the latest before the GeNetX. Guitars: Unfortunately, there are very few US made guitars that are both inexpensive and good. But two companies put out a guitar made in Korea that are phenomenal. The PRS Santana SE and the Hamer SATF. Retail for each is around $800 but both can be found at $500-600. Strings: Anything that lasts and sounds good for the entire length of use. Gibson Tone Tempered Pure Nickels. Buy em from MF at $6.99 instead of retail $13.99 Pure opinion right? Because us church ministers tend to be opinionated. Right? Submersible
On the used market, G&L guitars are tremendously undervalued. A used Legacy or ASAT in excellent condition will often sell for under $500, and there are plenty to choose from.
michael saulnier
If you're a fan of Fender guitars, the two great "values" IMHO are the Jimmy Vaughn signature strat and the Nashville Tele. The JV strat is a "classic strat" design with the vintage vibrato system. It has a cool thick "V" neck which matches the one Jimmy likes to play. I find it easy to play and it certainly has that true "strat" sound. The pickups are the Tex-mex which sound better than the "standard" ones in the other MIM strats IMHO. The Nashville Tele also has the Tex-mex pickups and unlike conventional Tele setups, has a middle pickup, in this case, a strat type. Five position switch like a strat. It twangs like a Tele, but has shades of strat as well, especially in the "in between" positions. Both of these seem to be well made, and the price can't be beat. You can easily find either of them for around $500. I decided to buy one of each a year ago at my local GC and was able to talk them down to $350 each plus cases... THAT was a good deal. guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! Check out my music if you like... http://www.michaelsaulnier.com
jackpine
I'll second that Nashville tele plug. I got GC to go down to $350 also. Most bang for the buck I've seen in years. jim www.relayerstudios.com
Wickerman
Jimmie Vaughn ROCKS! He's like his brother but, alive! Well, okay, so they're playing and musical styles are both very different but they are/were both AMAZING blues players. The JV and SRV strats are both great. I'd love an SRV strat with a plain pickgaurd. (Don't want people to know I'm coppin off from him) The nashville tele is cool but the nashville "b-bender" model is quite annoying. Maybe it's my imagination but the B seems to go out of tune faster. Anyway, the texas pickups are awesome. I'm thinkin of putting two in the guitar that I'm building. Dan South
Korg Pandora PXR4 - the ultimate mini-recorder/practice box. Includes a tuner, metronome, beat box, microphone and Pandora effects. It will even play back audio at half-speed for dissecting licks (just press and hold the Play button). Brilliant!! http://www.korg.com BTW: The list on the Mackie MDR2496 that someone mentioned above is $3799. It's big brother (the HDR2496) lists for $4999. The Black Knight always triumphs! A used Legacy or ASAT in excellent condition will often sell for under $500, and there are plenty to choose from. Oh man, you Yanks have all da luck . G&L's are pretty rare around Europe and when you do stumble over one, it's bound to be very expensive. I'll second that Nashville tele plug. I got GC to go down to $350 also. Most bang for the buck I've seen in years. Now this almost hurts. In Europe, count on paying twice that for a new Nashville Tele . Used, count on paying $500,-.
